Hearing Problem

For someone who has a 50% hearing loss, is there some type of ( like Depth Master ) or something similar that can be used along with a detector that will improve their hearing. With volume control on headphones set to max, she still has a hard time hearing.

Somwhere in my reading and travels I've seen a device that plugs into the phone jack that lights up when a target is detected. You might want to research that.

You could get a Tesoro, man those things are LOUD!

They do make an LED light that plugs into the headphone jack that blinks when you hit a signal.
They're was also a device that plugged into it that would vibrate when you hit on a target, and If I remember right it had variable intensities for stronger or fainter responses.
It's been a couple of years sense I researched that for a guy, and I don't even remember how I found that stuff now. Maybe tomorrow I can go through my very old post here on the forum and find something.

I also have a hearing problem. I wear small behind the ear aids. I use Tesoro detectors. My head phones has volumn controls. I take my hearing aids off when I wear my head phones. They hurt my ears after a little while... I turn up the volumn and I can hear the tones good.
I also have a Detector Pirate Pro that I will have to sell. I contacted Detector Pro about an internal adjustment for my Pirate. They told me they can not be adjusted any more. So I guess I will sell it... KEN

Hi HappyHour, the hearing aids I got through the VA appear to be identical to some I see advertised on TV, except mine do not have a volume control. They are very small and are fit to the inside of my ear and can be worn with headphones. Normally when wearing them and not detecting they do improve my hearing a great deal , so much so that I feel like I hear way more than I "want" to hear. It is probably because certain sounds(tones?) become harsh and downright hurt my ears. For instance, keys rattling together drives me nuts, or dishes/plates clanging together absolutely hurt my ears. Must be habit and old age but they are truly annoying when I hear so much extra stuff going on in my head I feel it is more of a distraction by wearing them than not. Sounds crazy and I may just need to wear them more often and get more accustomed to them. I have tried. I do wonder though how" much" the aids change the sounds I have grown to recognize coming in over the phones? They change for sure. I have worn them several times detecting, trying to get used to them, but even if they don't hurt after awhile I still remove them for the comfort of less sound. Yeah, does sound crazy and certainly not likely so crazy to someone with 50% hearing loss. Such phones may help in such hearing loss. I still have a Depth Master that I use from years ago that I bought trying to boost my hearing some. Be cool if you could find and try some of them. I thought I would mention all that in case it would help in some way. My dig finds have always been enough for me to be content with in spite of my hearing loss. Many of us have loss of certain "tones", making everyone's hearing different , thus harder to find any one aid that works real good for everyone. It is a matter of aids/phones needing to refine tones, more so than bumping up volume on everything. Just hang in there and keep looking an trying. Maybe something good will show up. HH, Charlie

Another option is to look into a small headphone amp, you can find these by doing an internet search for "headphone amp"

I have tested several..

Take it from me when you can jump in behind another hunter and dig targets they can't hear then it's worth every ounce, plus there is a Vid cam on the opposite side. Often I will watch for other hunters digging and leaving a trail for the target lane at the beach then I will use that line to hunt.

I also have a hearing loss. I went to radio shack and bought some ear phones and they work great. They have volume control on both sides. You might give them a try.

Happy_Hour, Don't know what detector your using but, you may want to take a look at detectors like the Whites MX5. It has a built in volume control. That way you can turn it up to the desired volume and fine tune it with the volume control on your head set.

I have real bad hearing as I have to have the severe/profound aids which are the most power full one and can not use them with any headphones as they just squeal with feed back, so have tried all the different headphones to find the right ones for me. I also have one of the amps Doc sell and it works good too. I don't use it anymore as I have different headphones for different detectors, on my Sovereigns I found the Timberwolfs had the volume I needed, but not on my Explorers as I found the Troy Pros had the best volume over my Timberwolfs on my Sovereigns. I also have a set of the Uni Probe headphones that have a probe on it too and it seems to work on most of the detectors I use, but not as loud on some as I would like. I got a chance to try a pair of some called the Bushmaster and these seem to work great on my Sovereigns and Explorers and all other detectors I tried them on so I have a set of them also, these are made for those that are hard of hearing.
I did try all the major brands headphones for detectors and even some made for home stereo, but the ones I listed seem to work the best for me and those that detect with me can hear my signals even if I am 50 feet away they are so loud.
I am total deaf on real high pitches and was told 75% to 90% on all other tones so they have to have very loud and block background noise and yet be comfortable, so these are what I use.

I have hearing loss due to artillery blast, and VA gave me hearing aids, but I have the black widow heads and they block out ambient noise great!!

I tried a couple of sets of the Black Widows and they were good, but not enough volume for my hearing loss or I would have kept them. I do find the Bushmaster made by the same company for a dealer have the volume I need and works great.
