Being new at this I don't understand the need for anything more than a plain old $10 set of headphones. What is the advantage of these $80 sets that you see advertised for metal detectors? My detector emits just 4 tones at a fixed volume, so as long as I can hear them all what more do I need? The pinpoint mode has a fixed volume too. What's the scoop on headphones? Thanks!

I'm not like everybody els, but to me its like the difference between this,,,

I like the second one better.

Happy Hunting,

After using a set of quality headphones, the cheapies sound like you have a tin can over each ear with a speaker in them. Another thing is comfort. The quality sets have leather ear pads and are comfortable for hours of detecting at a time. Read the component make up for the cal-rad or other cheap sets then read the component make up of a quality set. The vinyl ones get sweaty, slide around etc. But the biggest reason is being able to pick up those faint deep signals that the cheap speakers just cant pull the sound through. Cheap headphones with a quality detector is like a Ferrari with vinyl seats.

I could jack in a set of $2.99 ear buds or a real quality set of headphones to my home stereo system.
They wont both sound the same - I'll enjoy the audio on one over the other.
On a machine that produces digital generated bell tone door bell chime - ding ding ding.
On a single tone analog audio - I want to hear whats going on.
I hunt by audio and if using a TID machine, it's audio still. The TID is only a secondary tool for setup and maybe the depth scale on coin objects. Audio

I have the Koss phones that came with my detector and a pair of 35.00 Radio Shack with the volume control in each ear and cant tell the difference, I actually like the RS ones better. I would like to try a pair of nice ones made specifically for detecting to see what I have been missing!!

I used to use the cheapie and even some home stereo headphones with the older detectors back in the 70s and early 80s. Many would hurt my ears after using them for a while plus many would get a broken wire so they would quit in the middle of a hunt. Later on I tried a set of Koss headphones used for DJs and they were much better, but still hurt my ears. Finally when I got my Sovereign I bought a set of the Gray Ghost and man it was like night and day as the tones were better and the ear pads fit more on my head and not pushing on my ears as much plus they really blocked out the back ground noise so I could hear my signals better. I tried the Timberwolfs and to me they had a better volume for me and find these were the best for the Sovereigns. Now on the Explorer SE I have the Troy Pros work the best for me as the ear cups are so comfortable and gives me good volume and tones no cheapie can. The reasons I like the ones made for detecting and cost a little more is the cords is heavy duty and most can be sent in to be repaired real reasonable if there is a problem, the ear cups are made for a person that will have them on their head for a long period of time and fit on the head instead of the ears, they also block out back ground noise so you can hear the deeper signals better. Most have a life time warranty too. The ones I have tried and like for detecting and made for detecting are the Gray Ghost, the Timberwolfs, the Killer Bees, the Sun Ray Pro Golds and the Troy Pros and these i will say are all excellent headphones, there are some too that are advertised for detecting, but I didn't care for them.
My Buddie used to use the Cheapies and once I let him try one of my sets i had he like the comfort and after a weekend he seen he was picking up more deep signals with his Explorer than he did before, now he has 2 sets of the better ones made for detecting and feels they are well worth the money and has a life time warranty too so in the long run they are cheaper than all the Cheapies he was getting when the cords got a broken wire in them and had to buy new ones.

When you folks say you pick up more signals - you are using analog detectors? Where mine has fixed volume (ding dong), it is just an issue of comfort and durability then.

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks Rick, I am going to try and find some good headphones. I have not experienced the "deep" signals at all!!?? They all sound the same to me.

Hay Road Gang,

All my Tesoroes have analog signal and discriminator.
I don't know what others get out of quality headphones, but:

When there is a response that is just a blip, it may be a very deep target. It only is exposed to the field of the coil for an instant because the field is so small at max depth. It's weak also. It is also hard to find it because it presents such a small exposure area. I may think it's just a pop or blip caused by background noise. That's where the headphones can help me tell the difference. These signals are passed up all the time. I have to listen closely, even with quality headphones to find these type of signals. It doesn't make the detector go deeper. It just improves my hearing.

Another response is when a target is over, under or on the same level with masking material. When the target is over or off-set from the masking material I may get a funny response that's caused by the MD trying to respond to one type of metal, but being interrupted by a response by another type of metal. You can not hear this with a machine that has a slow response time or a digital response. Most Tesoroes achieve this. It just sounds like trash and can not be repeated in all directions of swing. If you use any discrimination, it's just a pop and not a response. These types of signals can be differentiated form trash signals only with quality headphones. I have made several good finds that way.

There are more ways that headphones can make a difference, but I'm tired of typing. My index fingers are getting sore. lol

HH,

The amount of benefit you gain will depend on which metal detector you are using Road Gang...
Didn't see where you mentioned yours.

Some machines have better audio expression than others.
and some rely on a Target ID to present much information.

Some headphones allow background noises to be heard and others will exclude most external noise.

Tell us more about your machine and how and where you intend to use it for best advice.

I've been swinging a Fisher Coin$trike for about a month, and recently purchased a set of Treasure Wise headphones (their full size, comfortable, volume controls on each ear, and have a stereo/mono switch). Most sites are selling them for $69, but I landed them on the bay for $20 shipped, they seem to be good quality, but I'm sure their not as good as the $100 metal detector sets a lot of others are using. I mainly bought them for beach hunting, as the C$ doesn't seem to vary in tone from what I can tell thus far (it has four tone ID's).

HH,

$50 + Shipping = $56 . These metal detector headphones usually have less quality
than cheaper stereo headphones.

You save $20 and get very cheep stereo headphones. For me that's wasting money.

One of the best quality metal detector headphones only cost $76 with free shipping
and a life time warranty.

I've already yanked the cord real hard causing the connection to fail. It was obviously
my fault. I abused the headphones. They don't care. They had them back in my hands
in 6 days Good as New. They apologised for my trouble.

That is much cheaper than replacing those cheep ones ever now and then. That's $56
a pop. One failure and you will have spent $112. I can't afford that, I'm poor.

Are you saving money by buying cheep, uncomfortable, lower quality than stereo headphones?

Maybe a lot of you have money to waste and don't care. But I have to try and spend my money
wisely. I'm poor.

Well maybe not as good of a deal as I thought, BUT if my detector only puts out four non-variable tones, what benefit would the Grey Ghost's, Sun Ray's, and Killer B's provide over these $20 Treasure Wise headphones ?

Having a full sized over the ear padded ear-cup will provide you with passive noise canceling, but (and please correct me if I'm wrong) it's not like I'm listening to my Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Master Edition Dark Side of the Moon here.....or is it ?

Some detectors have little expression.

I don't know about the Fisher Coin Strike.

I thought most Fishers were expressive.

Some machines put out a digital sound

without expression. If I was in that cituation

and I couldn't change it, I would go for a

light set of wireless headphones. No wire,

and so light and easy to ware.

I would be lost without my analog responses

howevre..

How can you accurately ID a target without

a good response? I gave up on heavy un-accurate

TID's with notching and all that target elimination.

I would rather ID targets than eleminate them

and loose depth and sensativity in the prosess.

Some people hunt in an open mode and then

change to a restricted mode to help ID the target.

I guess that helps . I just lift the coil and thumb

the analog disc. It's done. Takes less time and

then I know when to dig.

I guess I'm spoiled. I just tend to think others have

the same capability.

It must be a pain to deal with all thoes distractions.

But on the other hand I've heard where people like it?

I'll keep my sweet analog expresive single tone.
