headphones

Ok so up to this point I have not used headphones much... is this wrong? Am I missing targets by using the machines speaker? Does using headphones save on battery life? Are there any cons or pros to using headphones or are they simply personal preference?

Headphones let you hear the deep'"squeaker's" that you would miss with out them - they also knock out backround noise like road traffic and waves breaking at a beach.
If you are not using headphones one thing is for sure - you are missing a lot of deeper / older targets.

Low end headphones are much better than none at all - but why would anyone want to put $25.00 speakers on a $1500.00 stereo ?
High end headphones - as many will tell you - are the only way to go.

If you invest in a pair of high end phones like Grey Ghost's or Killer's B's I'm sure you'll be very happy with the results !

Good Luck !

Ok. Next question... is there a difference between high end detector headphones and high end audio (music) headphones... I'm sure my turtle beach head phones for gaming would work

Your batteries will last longer using headphones.

A serious detectorist would never go without headphones unless maybe filming a video for audience effect.
IMO using headphones is NOT a personal preference but a necessity.
As eTRAC-Ohio already mentioned, with all the background noise, you are indeed missing targets, guaranteed.

Far as the hi-end detector and audio headphones, i'd say the most important factor are the impedance ratings. The headphone's input impedance must match the detector's ouput impedance to get maximum power transfer and freq. response. And of course, there's the different jack sizes and adaptors to cope with.
Offhand i don't know what the eTRAC's audio out impedance rating is, maybe someone here does and will chime in.
I do know the eTRAC's jack pinout is wired for the industry stereo standard as my wireless Rapoos worked right out of the box with a standard stereo 1/8-1/4" adaptor.

Also, headphones designed for detector use are more durably built to handle a lot of abuse in the field whereas
music type headphones are not meant to be thrown on the ground when yet another pull tab is dug up, flung in the trunk of a car at the end of a 'skunked' day or get saturated with mud or soil.
The cord on dedicated detector headphones are also more durable to handle the constant abuse and movement they are exposed to.

If i were you, i'd forget the music headphones and get the best detector headphones you can afford.

I use Sennhauser 280's that are a music noise canceling headphone and love them. One reason I can't use the Koss is because of the short cord (and they sound like crap compared to the Senns) is because the Senns have a real long cord. I dig with a long handled Lesche and with the long cord I can set machine on the ground after I locate a target, dig a plug with the shovel while standing up, headphones still on. Once I put the headphones on they never come off till I'm done. I'd bought the Senns in the beginning to use with my drums while practicing.

Ok.. makes alot of sense.. i appreciate the info guys. Sorry if I come across ed kind of blah lol I work thirds and normally my posts are rushed, but I really do appreciate you guys taking the time to respond and give info:)
