headphones????

OK I'm very interested in all these different types of headphones for my Excalibur 2,now Ive been reading about making a set from the peltors with Sony earphones, which sounds like a neat project which I'm sure ill do just to try them out, but my question is this, what about just buying a set of grey ghost or black widows or any of the other brands out there with a high noise reduction rate on ambient noise??i understand that there's a cost factor for most of us,but what are we really saving here??i understand most of us with the Excalibur may or may not dive or get headphones wet at times, well i know i do get plummet ted by the waves at times, OK anyhow,id like to know do these high dollar headphones do the same thing as these project headphones??I'm just asking for info here,Ive used my stock yellow headphones for several years now and Ive found that its time to change them for comfort and after reading on this forum Ive been interested in these headphones project.anyone care to give some input hear??

I think the main advantage of the peltors are the 35db sound protection, this will cut out most of the unwanted ambient sound, as an example the sunray golds only rate at 26db, also the comfort factor, these peltors are made as ear protection to be used all shift while working so should be comfortable. The best way i can relate to the difference its like driving along the freeway in trafic with the windows open and trying to listen to good clasical music, wind up the windows and the difference is noted imediatly.

Basically the koss yellow headphones have reasonable sounding waterproof electronics but are let down by the cheap earcups that let in everything and don't allow you to hear (like the car with the windows open)properly whats being produced, if you don't get wet use the sony if you do use the original ones fitted into the peltors which is what i will do when i get them.

Thanks Kered,
You put it very well, in a nut shell. As I age the "roll up the window analogy" becomes much more pertinent! Especially as you said listening to classical music.

Best regards,
Steve

Another difference is that the Sony elements are 64 ohm as compared to the other companies 150 ohm so they are LOUDER ....So now you have LOUDER going into a set of Peltors which are much more isolated , and you have a set of phones that you can wear around ANY kind of noise and still hear very lclearly ....Jim

so you put louder into a more soundproof headcup, isnt that gonna increase the chance of damaging your hearing? not sold on that being a good idea.

whats the rationale behind capitalizing some words, is that like emphasis or shouting?
I work with someone who talks like that, we call him Kramer, like on Seinfeld.

I type like that on a regular basis .....I'll try to type more quietly ....Sometimes I get excited and can't contain myself .....I'll work on that for you .....It's more like an emphasis thing ..... Is this better ? ....... I doubled up on my Prozac before I wrote this ..... As far as the phones being too loud , you can put a volume control or put a couple of controls on to suit your liking or you can turn down the volume on your detector .... or you can run your Sovereign into an amplifier , and run your Soveriegn at full blast into the amplifier , and control the volume output from the amplifier ..... or there is room in the phones to put some additional foam to quiet them down ......Many ways to tame the phones ....My hearing is shot from playing in so many bands over the years , so I'm deaf in one ear , and can't hear out of the other .... It happens when you get old !!.... Jim

Hey Jim, yeah I think one would best put in the volume control to prevent ear damage. I agree those sonys are loud, I bought a pair awhile back on crazymans recommendation and they indeed do have a good sound but had minimal outside noise block so I got rid of them. absolutely useless at the ocean beach.

the peltors are inexpensive enough to put most headphone innards in them. I think the koss ur 30s that come stock on minelabs are excellent sounding phones but they slide off my head when I lean forward so I dont use them, but those would also be good to put in the peltors.
Ive used the peltors in our boileroom for sound blockage and they are pretty good quality. are the wire frames that hold the earmuffs stainless steel? I cant remember, will have to look. exposed like that they would probably rust easy at the beach if not SS.

Neil ,
I'm not sure if the wire frames on the Peltors are Stainless Steel or not ....??????........ I guess everyones hearing is different ....I agree with you that the Sony's are loud , and I also agree that they did not have good isolation from the outside noises ....I needed the louder phones, and also needed more isolation from the outside noises ....This is why I took the Sonys apart and put the elements in the Peltor 105's ....... What I do not agree with you on , is the UR30 phones sounding excellent ......Sorry , but I think you are one of the only people that I've heard that said they liked the sound of these phones for detecting .....I think they are veiled sounding , and so do most folks I talk to ....They sound like someone put a piece of foam inside the phones to deaden the sound ...... I can't hear the actual character of the tone when using the Koss UR30's .... Out of all the phones I've listenned to , I dislike the Koss phones the most for detecting .....As I said , everyone's ears are different .... There's plenty of room inside the Peltors to put volume controls and they are not that hard to wire up ......The only other issue would be to design a limiter that would tame those pesky shallow targets from ripping your head off on the Sovereign !!.... Even I can hear those things too loud !!.....No issues when using them with the E Trac ......Jim

SS.................Been using the Peltors for almost 3 years now...No rust.......Dunked in a few times and around saltwater...............just like the day I bought them.......

I like the sound of the Koss ur30's too(on the etrac) but they are let down by the casing(as like Neil mentions) and no volume control, on the MLO forum quite a few have changed them into peltors amd the likes

Kered ,
Have you listened to the Gray Ghost line of headphones ? .....If you have , what do you think of their tone ? ......The reason I ask is that the tone that I can hear more clearly, and can tell what's going on with a target better , is the Gray Ghost line of phones .......Some don't like the tone of the Gray Ghost phones ....They say it sounds cheap .... The briter , more crisp tone , is what I hear better , and is more telling to me than any other tone of any phone I have heard to date ....If I could get the elements from those phones , and put them in a set of Peltors , and put in a limitter circuit and volume controls , they would be the PERFECT phones for me ......Everyones ears are different ..... Jim

Yes i tried them, they sound tinny to me and harder to distinguish the seperate tones, i've also tried Maz puma, Predetor ML(real good on the sov but not so good on etrac, hard to find too as the newer version is not so good) panasonic & philips hifi, and finally setled on the sunrays(for now) as you say each person is different with thier hearing and likes/dislikes.

I was going to say that the SunRays should suit your needs pretty well with the type of tone that you require .....I like the limitter circuit in the Sunrays .......I could have lived with them if they were louder and worked better on both my E Trac and my Sovereign ....I'm not going to pay over $100 for phones that don't cover all the bases for me .....Some come close , but most don't ...... You say you settled on the Sunrays ....What would make them better for you ? ......Jim

There is not much that can be done to better them, a couple of nigles i have have been sorted on the new ones(hopefully) I have two sets the first ones i bought have a good memory in the cable but a wire broke inside somewhere, the second set has no problems with broken wires(so far) but the cable doesn't have the same memory in the cable and is streaching. The cable issue has been addressed as far as i can see on the website, also a handy pad for the top of your head has been added, maybe a removable cable just in case of any future cable problems would be a good idea(even if it had a couple of screws to hold it on and semi-fixed rather than a jack like some that come out). The rest is fine, waterproof boots on the switches, comfortable leather pads, volume controls that don't move unless moved. I have been out in some really appauling rain storms and they never flinched(they keep your ears warm too) They get a bit sweaty in the warm weather we get here though but so do any other full cup headphones, its a price to pay. If they had waterproof cones i would put a set on the excalibur, i've got some peltors on the way but haven't decided which inards i will put in yet, either the original koss waterproof excalibur ones, the koss ur30 or even the sunray with dodgy cable and risk a ducking(they work fine on the F75 and whites as is)

ok now im at a cross roads,i was sent a set of gray ghost underwater headphones,a early xmas gift..anyhow,i need to know where can i get the water proof connectors at? the same connectors that are on my excalibur 2 for the battery connection, anyone know where i can get these plugs at??

Hello John,
You are one fortunate guy! Be careful with your ears though. You only have 2 of them!

Kind Regards,
Steve

Santa loves You! For!sure............this is the only way I know how to hook up the male ikelite connectors to the pod

Get yourself a old/new battery that is not cracked ,.......on the female ikelite end of the battery pod, pull the end cap off by removing the 2 small Allen's gently prying the end out evenly
I would Highly recommend this...use a computer anti-static wristband..Best Buy, computer store..7 dollars, and I ground mine to the Baseboard heat copper pipe or to your computer if it has a ground, 3rd plug
Take and pull the end cap off the pod, the same way you did the battery pod.....very simple to do........disconnecting the tiny white plug to the main board, with a set of needle nose...slowly, and gently upward...do not touch the board, and make sure you touch a ground in the house before you work on this ...

Cut the little white & red plug wires of the headphone cord pod end cap,..do the same with the red and white wires of the batteries female ikelite connector, solder and shrink wrap each, install the little white plug { it has a rail on it so you put it on the correct way] Slide the female Ikelite plug into the pod with plumber grease, or dielectrics grease around the O-Ring, Allen's in, end cap covers on plug in the GGhost and go find some gold. Good Luck Joe
