headphones question

Hi all! I have a headphone question for you pros: My stock headphones for the Explorer XS are deteriorating badly and I will need a new set shortly. I have been using the stock headphones for approx. three years, and I have been very satisfied with them, but before I purchase a new set, I am wondering if there is something better out there, and if so, I would appreciate any recommendations. I have seen some positive feedback on the "grey ghost" headphones, but I would like to hear from the users with both positive (for example, what do you think makes them superior to the stock headphones) and negative comments if possible! Any dealer recommendations would also be appreciated! Thanks! ~Larry~

I just bought a pair of Black Widows . I'm not happy about the volume. The sound is so low I had to move my threshold up one number over my stock headphones. They are advertised as being the loudest in the line. I sent them back so they can check them out. They feel great and knock out most all of the outside noise. I hope we can get them to work.

I had been using the Gray Ghost Ultimates but they developed a short near the plug. I tried the Sun Ray Phones. First impression: They are a little "tinney" compred to Grey Ghost. I have gotten use to them now and I put the GG back on for a try the other day. First off the SRs are lighter and more comfortable plus the GG seemed to lack volume. I would buy the Sun Ray Phones again. Reasonable price too.

Very interesting what you said about the GG volume...... I just recently purchased a pair of GGs and they seem high quality construction, etc. - as you'd expect from expensive headphones and you always hear glowing reports about them but I also was a bit disappointed in the volume level too. I have to max them for routine, normal detecting areas. My hearing is certainly not as good as it was 20 years ago but it's not so bad that the lowest 8 notches on the volume control should be essentially useless - don't know if that's a common experience or if I got a pair that was a batch problem or what......

No, I think you got a regular pair. The folks I know that use GG run them with the volume maxed out. I run the Sun Rays at full volume. I guess it is a good thing that they do not come with too loud settings because us detectorists would most likely run them full volume, trying to hear more signals, and ruin our ears.

My GGs are plenty loud to hear tons of signals, they are at the point that if you are in a lot of trash it becomes almost too loud on the shallow targets.

You are right though, why do they make volume controls on most detecting headphones when 98% of folks run them wide open?

I agree with your choice Sunray are the dogs danglies.
Over the years I have tried and used a few pairs but these Sunrays have been in use for the last two years and one day when they need replacing I will get the same again.Jerry.
