Headphones or not?

I was just reading Doug from Iowa's latest newsletter and there are some great detecting tips by Paul Melkus. But one states "Always wear headphones." I always wore headphones for a while, but then got tired taking them off every time I started to dig. I could see wearing them if I was near traffic or in another noisy place, but most of the time I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I have pretty good hearing and can hear the faint beeps. Any feedback on the real value of headphones verus that loud little speaker installed on my Tesoro?

They are not needed all the time. I can turn my tesoro's so I can hear anything from the speaker that i could from phones.
I think alot has to do with also blocking out background noise. if you at a beach the surf would dron out dep signals.....also being in the woods with all the leaves and branches I ahve to use em because the crunching of leaves and brush makes it difficult to hear.
however out in AZ gold hunting I did not want em on completely as we ran into rattlers quite often.
The last issue I can think of is the detector....some detectors have very weak audio....and even with headphones they are still low. Now the Umax machines are not one of em.....you can hear a umax turn on from a mile away.
So...it is a preference...I use headhones most of the time....except with a umax as I don't need em usually.

Maine Scott covered most of it, but other than that, using headphones saves on the batteries.
Also, if a short cord is the only problem, head down to Radio Shack. They have plug-in cord extenders. But don't buy the cheapest cheesiest one to save a buck or two -- they don't hold a tight connection well and they just end up shorting out all over the place.

I say wear them, the better you get with your detector the more they become essential! I use Original Grey Ghost and they are good! Bought them from DetectorDepot.com/Terry, He can give you a good deal. I got a hit on a piece of aluminum that seemed so good........beside it was a 1930 penny: so-slight change in signal made me curious. I'd never have heard that with my detector only. Its your choice/more finds for me. By the way I just found an 1857 dime about an hour ago.

I ALWAYS wear headphones. You might THINK you have great hearing, but the real subtle signals are easier to hear with headphones. Another advantage is that your batteries will last longer. I can't figure out why you need to take off the headphones to dig a target do your headphones have a really short lead? I don't know anyone who takes off their phones to dig
