What is the reason for earphones, If the coil passes over a small flake, can you not hear a beep without them?
 
Some of these signals are so small and weak it may just be a change of threshold that you can hear with headphones that you wont without them. They also keep your detecting more privite as everyone is not hearing your response. Another reason is the battery life is increased with headphones. Headphone will also block out much of the background noise. In most cases you finds will increase by using headphones plus you will be digging deeper targets too. I dont know off hand of any reason not to use headphones.

Thats when I use the ear buds. I am surprised nobody makes a QUALITY set for detectors. I have found the JEnsen JB 15 work ok and keep you from cooking your brains plus you can wear a sun hat too.
