Headphones installed won't shut down external speaker

I bought a used ctx from a member of this forum and when I plug them in, the external
Speaker won't go silent.
Has any one else had this problem, or is it just how the machine is?

Sounds like They are not immediately compatible with the CTX.you will need the Radio Shack adapter to shutdown the external speaker.I would look up the part number for you but my 2 year old is running around my feet.

Not all headphones are fully compatible with the CTX. The ones that aren't won't shut down the external speaker.

There are manufacturers out there that make headphones designed for the CTX.

Check the Sunray Electronics Website. They are one of the manufacturers that make a set of headphones specifically designed for the CTX.

They are Grey Ghost with the 1/4 inch plug. Has any of you had this problem with
This type of plug?

Well, you can buy a new pair of $headphones$, quick $2.99 solution that I and many others have probably been using is the adapter

Radio Shack part number 274-0360

You can also make a short pigtail that allows the headphones to function. Digger came up with this " fix " and it is in the CTX 3030 Resources Forum: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,1729960,1729960#msg-1729960

One of these days I am going to make one of those....But, the adapter has worked so well for me that there isn't a benefit for me to make one.

Your headphones will work fine as is with the WM10.... wildherre

No, it will still emit audio.

Wildherre is correct. When the WM10 is turned on the CTX goes silent. The sound is then either from the WM10 or from headphones attached to the WM10. (Plugging headphones into the WM10 will silence the WM10 speaker.) I use an older set of Sunray headphones that do not shut off the CTX speaker. However, when used wih the WM10 they work just fine, audio only from the headphones.

That is not the situation I have with the Uniprobe headphones. At work now but will respond verbose later on..

When using the WM-10 any of my headphones work and no sound from speaker. If you do not plug into WM-10 you will hear sound from speaker of detector but when WM-10 is on plugged in or not all sound comes from the WM-10. Now the Uniprobe Gary uses my have some different results but in general this is how it goes with headphones and WM-10.

I have some headphones with replaceable cord so my nephew made for me a short connecting cord to use with headphones and WM-10 so did not have to deal with a longer cord. Also made a short pigtail to use other phones while plugged into the detector directly that way do not have to use the adaptor ...which allows for more flexibility.

WildHerre and C & R are probably correct regarding the headphones working fine from the WM-10 external module. My responses were based on the facts the OP gave us which was that he has a CTX, and that he has Grey Ghost headphones. Assumptions were made that the OP has the WM-10 Module and that is what he wanted to use. I know I would use it if I had it, but not every CTX sold does. So, we were discussing two different facts of life with the CTX and headphones

Slightly more in depth analysis of what I found with the Uniprobe and the CTX

Headphones to Detector Connections
Using No adapter plugging directly into the detector you will get audio from the external speaker of the detector and from the headphones. When you switch the "Comp" (compatibility) toggle switch on the headphones the audio emitted from the headphones will become softer to louder.
Using the adapter plugged directly into the detector the headphones will be the only thing that emits audio shutting off the external detector speaker.

Wireless Connections
As to be expected turning on the WM-10 module will turn off the detectors external speaker. With the assumption that you have paired it correctly.
Using the headphones while plugged into the adapter which is plugged into the WM-10 module you will hear sound from the headphones only.
Interestingly enough with the adapter plugged into the module the headphones will emit audio in only a single position of the Comp switch.
If you plug the headphones directly into the module switching the Comp switch allows you to hear a softer or louder audio from the headphones.

I use a set of older wireless headphones with mine. When I plug in the sending unit the headphones work but the onboard speaker works too!
I fixed the problem with an 8" extension cord from RadioShack. #42-2559.
I had one before that I used with my E-trac and DFX but the wire must have gotten loose on it. So i got a new one on E-bay for $3.00 and the problem is fixed. :)
