headphones for safari

Can anybody give me some in-site on headphones.Just purchased a safari and got a pair of Koss with it.They do not have a volume control on them and I feel I will lose out because of that.

mbman,

I like the Koss phones because they were intended for use in music applications so they give a truer signal. I feel that the strength of the Safari is the amount of info that you can get from the sounds, but if the phones are lower fidelity then you will lose the subtle differences from a target response. I actually got the Koss phones when I bought an Xterra 50 and kept using them when I upgraded to the Safari.

Just a humble opinion,
TomH

After a few month's research - I decided to ask for a set of - "Ultimate Gray Ghost's" - for Christmas.
I checked around - best deal I found - they were only $117.00 with FREE Shipping from Colonial Metal Detectors in New England - you can google their website.
A lot of Minelab user's in this forum really like the Gray Ghost's !

There are also a lot of people that like the Killer Bee's - Killer Bee / Wasps, Black Widow's, Ratphones, etc.
I think the bottom line is - if you have a high end detector - it's a real good idea to invest in a high end set of headphones - their all good!

Good Luck & Happy Holidays! --- Mark

I have to say I love the KOSS 99's I bought. Mine do have the volume control. I also have a set of the Killer B's and like them. A friend of mine uses the Grey Ghost and prefers them. Honestly I have briefly listened to the Grey Ghost he uses and are very good, yet prefer the KOSS because of the quality of sound I get or at least "hear". As TomH stated above, they were for music applications, and the '99's' are a more durable for field use. There are other great headphones dedicated to the hobby and I am sure many opinions. You ability to discern the sounds will dictate the the best for you.

I don't know about the sound quality of Koss phones because I have a high freq hearing loss, but I broke two and found out they have an limited lifetime warranty if made after 1980. Just sent them in and get free repair or replacement. I just did that on two of them that the plastic strap broke on. They sent me new ones, a later version and the turnaround time was less than two week! Onus

I also have the Koss phones,( E-Series 9000). The volume slide was malfunctioning so I sent them in, they fixed them. They now only work on my White's xlt, and my BH's but no longer work in my Safari. What a bummer, I am going to either send them back again or just use them on my other machines. In either case I am also going to get some new phones. What I like about the phones is the fact that they cover my whole ear, preventing sunburn, windburn, and also keeping them warm in the colder weather. Ron

I hunt with a Quattro. Love my Sunray Pro Golds with it. I have some high frequency hearing loss, and the Pro Golds work perfectly for me.

I have two pairs of Black Widows. Awesome headphones...cuts out most of the ambient outside noise so you can hear the signal more clearly. Gray Ghosts, from what I've heard, are right up there with them. A little costly for either one but definitely worth the money spent.

Detector Pro has a model called Nugget Buster NDT. IMHO, it is the best in their line for the E-Trac, Explorer series and Quattro/Safari line. Those detectors have a built in sound suppressor, so for 95% of owners, they do not need a Limiter switch (Ultimate, Black Widow, SR Pro Gold, etc). It's a moot point. The NB NDT's come with two replaceable cords, so there's No Down Time (NDT). Black Widow's are super with the Sovereign series.
Good hunting

I don't use headphones, I have tried detecting with them and I prefer not using them. I find the speaker on the Safari works just fine, and since I primarily hunt the woods I don't drive anyone batty. I don't like being attached to the machine when I'm digging, and the wires just get hung up while moving through heavy brush. I also enjoy the sounds of the woods while I hunt. The few times I've worn headphones I haven't heard any sounds over targets that the speaker wouldn't pick up. I suppose if you hunt parks and beaches environmental sounds may make it difficult to hear tones.

Nugget Busters NDT have 2-volume controls with NO Limiter(with a replaceable cord). Ultimates have 1-volume control with a Limiter ON-OFF switch.

These 2 are my personal first choices:
>>>Gray Ghost NDT have 2-volume controls with the Limiter permanently ON(with a replaceable cord). Yes it may be a moot point to have a Limiter when it is not needed on some machines with a built in sound suppressor, BUT I feel it is better to have a Limiter than not have it. It clips off high sound blasts and you can use it with other metal detectors giving more versatility.

>>>Black Widows have 2-volume controls with a Limiter ON-OFF switch. (BW's block out 29 db, but all of the above block out 24 db). I wish Black Widows had a NDT replaceable cord. Unfortunately this company does not have a 2-volume controls and a Limiter ON-OFF switch with a NDT replaceable cord.

I do NOT want 1 volume control, instead I want 2 volume controls because I DO want to adjust to each ear, or giving the option to shut the volume in one ear completely off, then off-set that ear muff-cup to the side of that ear, acting like the Rattlers with only one ear muff-cup. So I can hear the outside noises as well for safety if need be.

Good luck finding a set that will work, I think most of the ones out there have a lag time, that is from the time you go over the target to the time you hear it. It would be a real nightmare with the Safari with the nulling of tones................MO

My next set of headphones will be wireless so I don't have the cord problem when digging.
