Hi all,i have the Koss headphones and am not happy with them. what make would be the best for the MXT any responces would be appreciated, thanks. Raoul

Which Koss do you have? The small light weight ones or others?

The most popular for serious detecting are the E-Series 9000's (my favorite) or the TD-80's (which are also sold by Kellyco, re-labelled as the "Accusounds"). All are great headphones, with lifetime warranty. Then again, I have seen Koss "cheapies" which sell for 99 cents.... so, Raoul, which do you have, and why don't you like them? Perhaps better ones are needed. Hope this helps; HH Jim

They have a lifetime warranty and are made for metal detecting. Here is the link to the headphones on our site. We have many in stock.

I have a set of killer b's .They have more than enough volume and excellent for blocking out outside noise, traffic etc. They work great for me.

Raoul,
I have tried many differnt set of Headphones over the years and at the present time I have a set of the Sunray Headphones I use on my MXT and the Minelab Explorer. Right now there is a sale on them for $65 when you buy any one of the SunRay pinpointing probes.
I feel the SunRay Probe makes finding the targets faster, digging less and smaller plugs and now with the deal on the headphones which normaly sell for $99 you can get the best probe and one of the best headphones too to make detecting even more fun and rewarding.

I have the Koss QZ99 noise reduction they are not bad but the earpieces slide down the s/s shaft when you take them of and when you put them on again you have to re adjust then to fit your head.
then i have the Koss TD80 which have no volume control and sends you death when you hit a good tatget,i used them on my Minelab SD2200d and they are perfect for that.

Take a look at the specs. of the BLACK WIDOWS--I have used many head phones over the 42 years I have been detecting---I like them the best of all I have had--DeathWind1

As you can see, everyone that has a pair that they like is quick to recommend them. Me included.
I have the Sunray Pro and really like them. They are high impedance so you get good crisp sound. They have individual volume adjustment for each side and two switches, one to switch between stereo and mono and the other to enable clipping to limit the high volume so you don't blow your ears off when you are pin pointing.
The stero/mono switch enables you use it with all makes of detectors.
They have ear pads large enough that your ear can completely fit inside the foam ring. The others I tried pressed on part of my ear and was very uncomfortable in a short time. I can wear these for hours at a time. Sounds weird to hear a bird or traffic when you take them off. They really block out outside noise quite well. It really startles you when your wife taps you on the shoulder to tell you supper is ready and you did not even know she walked up to you.

While I understand that you need to hear the signals well, I find myself being nervous that I can't hear someone approaching me. Maybe it's my law enforcement backgound, but I find myself concentrating too much on the signals and the display and that I'm not paying attention as to what's going on around me. A lot has to do with where a person MDs, but I think its something to consider when looking at headphones.

In responce to JCarieres comment on not hearing what is going on around you. I have had some scarey sittuations while detecting in the woods with headphones on. My first was a large oak tree falling down fifty feet away from me. I first felt the groung shake and then heard the loud crash of the old tree. That was too close. Next these woods are also used for dirt bikes. I normaly walk on the side of the trail but on this day I decided to walk on it. I was ran over by a speeding biker. I was not sure what the VDI reading was before he hit me but my detector was fine. And my koss 9000's stayed on my head.

I agree that blocking out ALL external sound may have it's pitfalls. You have to set your priorities and go from there.
If you do not want to block out all other sounds you can either use a single earphone or get a set of lightweight ones. Always make sure you get the high impedance ones required by (most) detectors. The 8 ohm ones used for portable radios etc. do not work well. You miss the weak signals and the sounds are muted.
Or, I just slip one cup forward onto my cheek bone and keep going. Most of the time I guess I prefer to be lost in my own little world.
When we are out camping I always carry a small FRS two way radio so my wife can keep in touch. When she first starts to talk I usually think it is a PA system calling me. I try to get her to use the call tone first. That catches my attention before she starts talking.
