I have always just got what came with the detector of something kind of cheap...Is it worth it to pay for a good set... I see Gray Ghost, Are they good?

and truth is, I don't see a whole lot of difference.

I alternate between a $8 pair of Vanco phones and a $80 pair of Koss TD 81s and the cheapies seem to work just as well in addition to being marginally more comfortable in hot weather.

Now I HAVE had cheap phones where I didn't like the fit, audio characteristics etc. but for general use / backups etc. I can recommend the Vanco phones. Got mine on E-bay. They are light, comfortable (don't squeeze the skull), have good sound and a volume control for each ear. After many years of hard hunting they haven't given me a moments trouble where I've had more expensive phones quit on me for no good reason.

Don't know about the "Ghosts", but many experienced hunters swear by them.

Probably depends on your hearing and wants and needs..Over the years have used a ot of detectors and $20.00 to $25.00 Calrads work well for me even on a $1000.00 unit...Yep Grayghost are dandies and many more out there also. Might let the forum know what unit you use and they might give recommendations as some just seem to work better on different machines...

I go through about 3 pairs of headphones a year. I just use the light ones, spend about 7-8 dollars a set and if they break, I either fix them or chuck them. I know some high end headphones have great warranty's, but a headset in transit for repairs is not good, unless you buy 2 and always have one for a backup.

Yea, I don't think it really matters, except to the
user..Any decent set of phones will work fine. Cheap,
or high $$$...Myself, I think the high $$$ phones are
a waste of money for a three tone metal detector, but
thats just me... As far as function, the cheap ones
work just as well as anything, as long as you can hear
em. Even cheap phones have a frequency response in
excess of anything the detectors need. Probably the
most important thing is comfort, weight, and a volume
control if needed. Myself, I use a set of phones as a
"quiet" speaker, but I don't actually wear them.
I just use them to quiet it down a bit. The stock
speaker is way too loud for my tastes..

That's the ones I use the most and they work equally well as the more expensive. We ain't exactly listening to a symphony, just a simple unobtrusive beep.

I will just stay with the good priced ones...The one Garrett puts out is good enough...Just that the wire breaks after some time..but that is because of the snagging in the jungle so much. Thanks everyone...
