Headphone jack

I have an el cheapo Wally World bounty hunter w/out a headphone jack. I want to install a Radio Shack phone jack. Would you just run the two wires that go to the speaker to it and place a resistor across two of the posts-one from the speaker side to the jack side? Thanks.

get a switched phone jack, It has 3 terminals, run 1 of the speaker wires to the jack and back to the speaker from terminal 1, the other to the jack terminal 2, the 3rd terminal(switched) on the jack back to the speaker. This way the speaker works till you plug in the phones and then automatically switches the speaker off when the phones are connected, best of both worlds

Thanks so much. I thought that I might need a resistor in series w/phone wire-is that already in the circuit?
