Headphone Impedance

Rob (IL)

New member
I have read that you should use phones with at least 60 ohm impedance with the MXT. I also read the closer the impedance of the phones and detector the better. What is the output impedance of the MXT?

Most of the head phone makers seem to be using the same speakers in their phones.
Frequency response: 200 - 3200 Hz
* Sensitivity: 72 db @ 1 KHz Min.
* Impedance: 150 ohms nominal.
Is there really any difference?

From what I read in the posts on this forum most headphones are really 75 ohm impedance not 150 ohm because the MXT is not stereo and the speakers are in parallel. CORRECT?

One maker claims an impedance of 270 ohms impedance. Would that be better?

Rob,

Here is an old post by Dave Johnson on the subject that should provide some of the answers you are looking for.

We got by for years with the cheap headphones with volume controls. If you are serious about hunting the deep "goodies", it is worth the $100-$150 for a good set of phones designed for MD'ing. Good used ones can be found in the for sale sections for $50-$75. Being able to hear the whisper of a seated coin way down could easily pay for the better phones though. The better phones are great for muting the outside noise which again helps hear the deep signals. If you have a hunting partner who likes to chat while "cladding", the lightweight cheapies work good and on hot sweltering days, the lightweights come in handy for that too. I have he Sun Ray Pros and love them but there are other good ones too.
