Headphone Feedback

Just got a pair of Grey Ghost Ultimates and I like them inspite of moderately low volume with everythig Maxed out. I notice a high frequency whine(feedback) which gets louder when I neal down close to the EX Coil so it has to be feedback into the ghost circuitry. Does anyone know if this is just the nature of the beast or is ther something wrong with the ghost? Thanks in advance if you can help. Rick

I've got the Origionals and noticed the low volume. The stock phones are louder but the clairity of the GG's make up for the lower volume with me. I also noticed the whine with the stock phones and it was louder with them
Overall I'm impressed with the GG's and just keep my head away from the coil.

I have jimmy serra head phones and get a low pitch wien when they get close the explorer coil!

Yup the feedback is normal when the phones are close to the coil, I used to get it with the Sovereign too, not sure what causes it, must be the phones are picking up the frequencies somehow.. the ultimates do seem to have a lower top end for some reason.. the NDT's seem have a much higher tonal quality to me

Thanks for the speedy reply guys, I can live with it, as they are very clear, and do a great job of blocking out the backgound. I bought the ultimates because of the switch to knock out the limiter thinking it would give better volume on the hits. I have some high frequency hearing loss and wish the volume with the ghost could be higher but I guess i will get used to it. Thanks again. Rick

Jim: Thanks for the reply but I have one more question. You mentioned the NDT's have a higher tonal quality, and I thought they were the same headphones as the ghost and the originals. The description on their web site indicates they are supposed to be the same except for NDT cord of course. Do you think the NDT's are louder overall? Thank you for the advise. Rick

Go with the jolly rodgers or the nugget busters. They don't have the limiter circuit and thus have much higher volume.

Rick,
I too wish there was more volume too and have tried many differnt sets and on the Explorer my timberwolf and Gray Ghost Ultimates seem to be the same volume. On the Sovereign the Timberwolfs are louder. I was told that if you want the best volume the Ultimates were the one as they have a limiter switch to turn off the limiter that the NDT dont have and have the limiter turned on all the time.
On Monday I will have to take a set of the NDT and see if it has any better volume on the Explorer.
Rick

Rich,
How you been doing??Sure a lot of good finds with the Explorer being posted on the Explorer fourm lately
I had a set of the nugget Busters and they have the same volume as the ultimates on the Explorer.
Rick

....than my stock Explorer XS headphones. I made the decision to try them instead of the GG's because of iffy messages regarding the volume level of the Gray Ghosts and partially because of the messages you posted stating the Timberwolfs were louder on your Sovereign. So I figured, why not on the Explorer, too? So thanks, Rick!!! I was also swayed by other factors, like the message stating it would take 4 to 6 trips to get used to the new sound of the GG's. I was also influenced because none of the Gray Ghost dealers that I contacted would let me try out a pair with an option to return if I found the sound level unsatisfactory, but a Timberwolf dealer jumped at it. After passing a half dozen coins and rings across the coil, I called and told him "You keep my money, and I'll keep your headphones." Now, after using them a half dozen times in the field, I find I have to turn down the volume [who woulda thunk it?] because I start getting a headache after an hour or so of targets blasting my eardrums. While the threshold is only about 10-20% louder, targets are something else (especially the higher frequencies, but the low ones, too) and really scream out at you. I know it's hard to make a decison, was for me anyway, to spend so much money for something you may or may not like, so anyone in the Washington DC area that wants to come down and compare the stock and Timberwolves on my machine, or bring along your own Explorer for comparison, is welcome.

I have gray ghost originals, ultimates and NDT's.. sold mny deep woods set.. theyu are all supposedly the same, but I seem to have a higher volume and clearer response with the NDT's... there is no limiter switch in the NDTS, but there is one of the resisters inside.... Full volume is plenty loud enough for me, I usually back the volume off just a hair from full with them, but I have pretty good hearing.. Timberwolfs at full volume are too loud for me, also I seem to get ear aches from wearing the timberwolfs in the warmer weather.. think there are too air tight and too tight around the head.. gray ghosts are much more comfortable and allow to hear a little outside noise which I like.. They also seem to be the most comfortable to wear with one muff off an ear, which I like to do also, especially in woods.. dont want anything sneaking up on me <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

the limiter switch seems to have no affect on the explorer.. some say it has something built in that over rides it

Thanks Rick, I can live with them just suprised the factory headphones are twice as loud as the ultimates, I do like their buils quality. Let me know how the NDT's sound. Jim has all three and says the are about the same. Rick

Thanks for the reply, I will keep the ultimates but might be interested in a different pair sometime as back ups. The dealer hear wants to sell me a pair of Koss phones with the White emblem on them, pertty scary hugh ?

whatever works for ya is the way to go, if you want to try a cheaper pair thad have a good high end the Koss TD81's do andthey are fairly loud.. never have tried them with the explorer but did with the Sov.. I didnt think they were very comfortable though

Any common headphone will do this it is caused by the signal from the detectors coil/loop.
All common headphones have a coil of wire which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy so you can hear the sound.Well the same thing happens when a headphone gets close to a detectors coil, the coil is transmiting an electrical signal which is picked up by the coil in the headphone and is converted to mechanical energy which you can hear.

I have a set of Nugget Buster, and their is no
great higher volume.
