Headphone cable DIY

I have a Minelab Sovereign GT and wish to make both a headphone cable from scratch, plus a set of headphones.
Here I am asking for help with the cable.
I am not very technically minded nor very skilled electronically and my soldering skills leave a lot to be desired, but one has to start somewhere eh.
Please can someone advice me how to wire up the connectors on the headphone cable? I have a length of 3 core headphone cable (red, white and black). I have a selection of end plugs, some mono, some stereo. I would like to use a 90

Thanks for the diagram. Makes no sense to me at the moment. Will the configuration of the headphone cable for the Sovereign be dependent on how the speakers (series or parallel), volume control and the jack is wired? Or is there one or more parts of the diagram I should use irrespective?

Most headphones are wired as stereo with a mono switch. So they can be used with detectors whose headphone jack is wired either way. The chart shows how to wire up the plug.
Mono headphone cords have two wires, stereo has three..
Download my headphone build tutorial, it may then make more sense.

Thank you very much.
I won't be using the cord or headphones on any other detector.
I will have an experiment with some 50, 64 and 150 ohm speakers.
Any suggestions as to series or parallel for speakers?
Am still so unsure about all this but thanks again for help.

Thank you. Off to buy a soldering iron today.
More questions, hope you don't mind.
What type/size of cable is used as the crossover cable that goes from one side (earcup) to the other side? In other words, what would be suitable cable for doing the job?

Go to the hobby shop that sells radio Control car, planes etc. They have some very flexible silicone jacketed servo wire that works great. Or just the deluxe wire will do-26 guage. I like getting my wire from thie place
http://www.hansenhobbies.com/products/connectors/servowire/sw_si20/ because my local hobby shops don't carry it.
