Heading to the beach this weekend and need some helpful advice....

Hello Forum members,

I am heading up to Maine this weekend and the wife thought I could hunt on the beach while the kids played in the sand.

There are supposed to be neg. tides -1.4, -1.1, -1.6 all around dinner time just before dark.

Any thoughts on how I should make the most of my time ? I will have my GTP1350 with the 10 X 14 DD, the standard coil, and the sniper coil. I assume the large coil should be used. The kids will have an ACE 250 with the standard coil.

The beaches where I will hunt are very flat and get deeper very slowly.

Yes I know to look for cuts, troughs, and low spots. But baring any of those what else ?

Any and all comments are welcome.

My method would be to figure out where the highest concentration of swimmers usually are and then thoroughly comb the wet sand within about 15 feet or so of the water's edge at low tide. Look for concentrations of coins and follow them. Discriminate out NOTHING. Unless you don't want gold, in which case you can disc out trash and go for the coins. :)

And of course, work the heck out of any cuts.

Mike,

Thanks for the advice. I hope to get two or three searches in at the beach if I am lucky. I will plan to run all metal with the large coil and when I get near the water I plan to use the salt elimination circuity. Any more thoughts or comments are always welcome.

beaches to the south of maine that are starting to cut well. Those hard beaches like Rye,wallis sands ect are a little hard to read...but look for any patches of purple sand were ever thats showing theres most likely sand loss and loot!!! good luck let us know how you do. I did get one silver coin today in salisbury 1953 rosie, some clad too.sand is moving there...but slowly!! HH

I WOULD AGREE 1000000% on that. Mike, I need your advice for PR for that matter? I will be a hunting deamon, no questions asked. No hostages either.

Good way to promote the hobby, provide some much needed insight and maybe make you some $ in the process.

One word of advice on a book - The Golden Olde website is really a wealth of information, but one thing that's lacking there and most everywhere else I've looked is alot of good photo and/or diagram descriptions of what happens on the beaches.

We all hear about rip currents, tides, nor'easters, cuts, wave action etc..., but it's really something you have to see in order to appreciate what happens. For example, pictures taken at the same spots over a given time period to see what the waves actually do to them - that sort of thing.

I can just about guarantee that if you can put together a book with alot of valuable examples like that it would sell very well out here to detectorists, beachcombers, shell collectors etc...

Good luck - I'm about "this" close to packing my bags and driving to Atlantic City tonight to see what all this "fuss" about nor'easters is all about :) I'm guessing the first big cut on the beaches there after a heavy tourist season would yield an awful lot of loot!!

what 20 mph north east wind plus high/full moon tides can do in one tide cycle, what some cuts I have hunted look like. I got photos of sanded in areas to compair with the same area after a storm and lots of other stuff I have seen hunting up here. When I started to play with the idea a couple months ago I was amazed how much info I had gathered the last 10yrs. well Im gonna give it a shot see how it comes together!!

Thanks for the helpful advice. Most of it I never got to read before I left because of life issues and the early departure for the vacation. Because of this I think I hurt my hunting at the beach.

I found a quarter on my first swing and then I chased signals most of the time finding nothing else.

I am not sure I had my SEN set way too high. My error, I did turn it down several times but still think it was too high in the end.

I also hunted a park near the beach for about 30 minutes before I was asked to leave by a park and rec worker that stated there was no digging allow on the grass due to all the water lines and sprinklers.

In the park I found about twenty or so clad coins so I think they do keep people out of the park.

Again thanks for trying to help me.
