Headed to the Beach with MXT....1st Time

I'm new to the sport but really love it !!!. I wanted an "all around" detector for a first time user. No question it was going to be a White's so I eventually went with the MXT 300 which offered me "good bang for the $$" plus the easy selection modes allow me to look for older coins and relics here in the Cajun Country of LA. I've read all the manuals, watched all the videos, surfed the net and read numerous chats on forums and websites like this one. Research is done. Already, I feel pretty good about my abilities and my machine. So ..... I went out and cruised my lawn and some relatives lawns and wow.... found numerous clad coins just like that. Nothing really worth mentioning though. For me, the MXT is pretty simple to use. I really did my homework and I feel my proficiency will definitely improve with more time behind the handle. Practice is done. This weekend, we are headed to the Florida Beaches for the week. I am very excited about this and you all know why! I'm looking for a few pointers / beach detecting tips from some of you pro's out there. I feel my detector will give me an advantage but just looking for a little more. I would appreciate some feedback and hopefully I can post a nice find next week ! Thanks.

Here in So Cal I did good on my first time , What I did is go to the places where they have a surfing school and wait till they go up in the afternoon, you will clean up because those kids lose a ton of money , lots of quarters. It helps to have a sand strainer too , makes it easier. Have a good time Mike

Great choice Cajun. You'll be hearing that a lot. Sounds like you've done some homework. A little goes a long way with the MXT because of it's relative simplicity. One thing, if you haven't picked up Jeff Fosters book on the MXT yet, I recommend doing so. The MXT may be simple but it still CAN be set up and run improperly, and that means less effectiveness. You'll be loving that machine more every time you use it. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise Scott and Mike. Will definitely get the book. No surfing schools here so i started hunting around the beach chair / umbrella areas at the end of the day. Learning more and more with each swing. Doing well here in Fl. Oil on beach here near Pensacola is really a non factor as far as Im concerned. The MXT has been great. Really starting to recognize the signals given off by 'trash' targets, even though im still digging them. I have taken Mikes advice and got a sand strainer. It helps. Also, my Sunray DX1 pinpointer came in via FedEx on Friday and it is awesome ! Thanks to Mr. Larry at BigValleyMetalDetectors for the assistance. I dont really spend much time at all digging. Move a little sand with my foot and then go straight to the target with it. WOW- it is so great.... I dont much about pinpointers, but the the Sunray is really something; cut my digging time to almost nothing, even in the sand. Take it from someone who doesnt know what he's talking about... it REALLY works.

In 3 hunts, I've found a numerous assortment of coins, keys, (2) cellphones, beer tops and pull tabs. Over $10 bucks worth of clad (Use for new AA batteries) Ive "dug" almost everything on the beach that had any chance of being something worthwhile. One quarter worth mentioning except was 10" deep using the 12" spider coil. No kidding. VDI was in the around 74.

Hoping for some older coins but not sure if this is the right place for it. I think i'm the only hunter in the area. Havent seen anyone else. Also it just rained. Hoping for a ring or jewelry.

It sounds like you have the most important piece in place, your enthusiasm. All that's left is putting the time in and if you really love the HUNT, you'll love every hour. Good luck.

BTW- You'll really understand the value of your pinpointer when you get in the dirt.

Sounds like your having a good time. I bought a sand scoop with a long handle and it makes recovery easy.I have 2 weeks vac at the beach this summer & I also would like to find a ring or some jewelry.

Just a few finds from the beach..... :detecting:

Do you best to avoid the oil .....and boycott the BP gas stations.

One tip! ...get to the beach early (at sun up) if you can.
Many of the regulars who live near the beaches get out
early. Others go late in the evening.

If you snooze you loose! Also keep in mind that
they come out with the tractor and sifters to groom
the beach early too. Best to get them before they
get there!

Good Luck!

Went down to the beach for about 2 hrs this a.m. for the last time before heading home to La. Kept hoping for a ring of some sort. Getting more familiar with the MXT. Learning the tones & signals & trends. Plenty of clad. Swung the coil in the right spot near a high traffic area and .....bamm..... Sterling silver ring located. First one ! Hard work payed off. Later found an ear ring of some sort. Good time overall and 1st time out a success. To all - - Thanks for the help and advice. Now looking forward to the dirt and some IHs and Wheaties.... EJ

That first sillver ring sure does feel good doesn't it. Congrats on the hard work paying off.

Make sure you don't get all that oil on it that's washing up on the beach. I just watched some videos on on the oil in the gulf - pretty sad that the beach we were on last year has oil on it.

Thanks for the concerns and interests in our Region. I'm back safe and sound in Cajun Country. We were on the Alabama / Florida line and the "tar balls" were minimal at the time that we were there. We did not see many of them but the beauty of the beach was only 'skin deep' i'm sure. What i didn't see is what concerns me. BP was quick to have clean up crews visible and active to at least give them impression that they really cared. ?? I'm no tree hugger, but all this stuff just can't be good for the environment and the aquatic life in the long haul. I was the only one hunting in the area; not sure if this was because of all the negative publicity surrounding BP and the Gulf in general.

The MXT was great on the beach. I was happy with all my finds....especially for a rookie like me. Oh - I also found an I-Pod shuffle in the sand which my kids said works fine. (About an $80 value). I have read many of the messages on this forum which have increased my knowledge greatly. I cant wait to get into some untapped lawns and other various sites here in Southern LA hoping to find some silver coins. Would maybe like to get in a club or possibly start a club around this area. Not sure if one exists. EJ :ninja:
