HEAD PHONES FOR EXCALLIAR 1000

What are the best head phones available for the excallibar 1000? I have the stock blue( painfull and noisy) Also are they easy to change yourself?

While I agree wholeheartedly with Eric As I chose that route as well. The cost and change was very little for a world of difference in what you were missing. Now that being said I screwed mine up and water leaked into the transducers (Headphones) and they shorted out. faced with having to do it all over again with the same Minelab type headphone I chose a different route. Since I treat my detector like any other tool in my box I want the best I can have. I researched and found That Mr.GoldMaster headphone are the preferred choice of many of the big guns we see making many of the great finds posted. I elected to place these on my Excalibur. All I can say is WOW! You don't know what your missing. Because you can't hear it! LOL! Gives these some research! One word of caution if you go the Gold Master way your going to have to re-learn all your target info that you previously learned! This was annoying at first but a much easier learning curve than when you first used the Excal. Your volume has to be cut by more than half or you'll hurt your ears! That's a good thing as if you have a very deep weak target turning the volume up will let you hear it better.
On another note Search this page for the way to make your change your blue one's to the Peltor's. Also you can cut and wire almost any brand headset on the unit. They may not be water proof depending what you use!

Have not tried the GM headphones ( I am sure they are great ) but of all 3 of my excals I like the old "Blue" the best. With these I am able to tell the difference between gold/nickel/pull tab and 95% + can slaw and since I hunt in the can slaw capitol of the world it really makes a difference at the end of the day and with the Peltor mod's my head does not feel like a squeezed pimple. Maybe when it finally goes south I will try the GM's

peltor's 105 with gel pads thay what use on my excal verry eazy to change there was a post here a wile ago step by step instroctions with out cutting wires

Buried Crap NJ .When you had your GoldMasters put on did they do the Ikelite connector for you? Or did they hardwire them.......................Reason I ask is if you leave out the capacitor filter on the endcap the volume gets louder....

Phil sent them without any connector as requested. I used self seal butt connectors. I shrunk wrapped each of the two wires and sealed the shrink with liquid electrical tape. I then shrunk the pair and the shrink with liquid electrical tape. No problems so far. I have the excal's volume at 35% of full. Gives me lots of room to bring up sleepers!

The best tones come from the blue tube machines with blue headphones. The blue are my favorite factory phones. With that said, GM phones will set your sound machine Free! You will simply hear more, and I find more with GM phones. GM phones are much louder and less muffled. Most water phones sound somewhat muffled because of the waterproofing. On every water detector I have the land phones are louder than the water phones. MGM has found a way around that and GM phones can be too loud and may require machine volume to be reduced!

After you use GM phones then try an Excal with stock phones, you will think there is something wrong with the stock machine! So take this as a warning... once you try GM phones you will never go back to stock! If you stick with stock phones and never try GM phones, you won't know what you're missing and will be content with your machine.

For my hearing the trade-off is with GM phones some tonality is lost. I believe that is because of the greater volume to some degree. But with GM phones one can hear the target signature better- the various alloys. So if one is cherry-picking, one can be more selective with GM phones. GM phones are comfortable and can be worn for hours! With GM phones my find rate has gone up. I believe GM phones bring about more target awareness over stock. SH34.

Seahunter34 well said. I have not that much time with GM but I do know that I hear more. I also have noted that while I can distinguish types of metals I can't tell some coins apart.

Hi Everyone,

I was considering swapping the original Excal ear pads with the Peltor HY80 Gel Ear Seals - leaving everything else as is. This seems like a super easy way to improve the comfort as well as help lower external sounds (just pop the existing ones on and replace with the HY80's). Just wanted to see if others who have done this mod are happy with the results.''

HH!

I like to buy me some Gold Master Headphones. but although I did read most of the posts about these headphones i still do not understand how to connect these headphones to the Excal. I,m not technical at all, and I,m wondering if I can do this myself.

Can someone give me some hints on this.

Thanks,

Andre

You can wire any connector you want too, or just hardwire them. I used self solder butt connectors(Home Depot) then liquid electrical tape. Heat shrink more liquid tape. I then used heat shrink for the outer casing and more liquid tape. i wrapped the outer wir with plastic coil protecting wrap and liquid tape to keep the ends in place. took about 1/2 hr most important thing is keeping the connection from flexing while using or the connection will just break at that location. Thes have about 75 hrs on them. Water proffing is secondary as the headphone are not water proof. water resistant is good.
