HEAD PHONE ISSUE MYSTERY

banditicey

New member
Our weather is just getting to the point that I can go out and detect for a few hours here and there

Unfortunately, I have been having a major problem with my head phones and the 3030

Since I am new to the 3030 I wanted to use my Grey Ghosts Head Phones instead of the wireless Head Phones initially

It seems that when I connect the Grey Ghosts the sound comes out of the machine for everyone to hear and not through the Head Phones

So everyone around me hears the signals which is not my way of detecting and interferes with my detecting partner

I have a call in to Minelab and may know something tomorrow but in the mean time I contacted Kellyico and I was told that the Headphones
that come with the 3030 worked but when other Head Phones are plugged in there is silenced with the 3030 but no signals come through from the Head Phones?

There was a suggestion that maybe "other" Head Phones needed an adapter to work.

Any Thoughts or Suggestions? The Kellyico Guy said he never heard of this problem before.

Thank You for Viewing and Responses are Appreciated!

Radio Shack has an adaptor, a plug in type so you can use your favorite headset.

Or, There is a way to bypass an adaptor but you'll need to take apart the headphone module. Then, jump the two outer headphone plug pins leaving the center pin alone.

Get a piece of wire, trim off the wrapping from both ends and twist one end to the outer pin and do the same the other outer pin, no need to solder this is an easy solution not needing an adaptor. Then, reassimble the module. You can always remove the wire, but chances are you'll be very pleased.

The first picture shows which pins to jump, the second pic with the wire connected with no solder, the last picture with my favorite headset no adaptor.

Now, the speaker shuts off when you plug in the headset eliminating an adaptor.

The headphones that come with the CTX will work with no problems, but most other headphones will work but will not shut off the speaker on the detector. If yours don't work at all the Gray Ghost should have a compatibility switch for mono or stereo detector audio, so switch that switch to the other position and it should give a audio in the headset and the speaker. If not than you may have a wire broke in the cable of the headphones and need to be repaired. It still wont shut off the speaker unless you make a patch cord or if Gary at Detector Pro when repairing the cord can change something.
Here is a link on the CTX resource forum how to make a patch cord. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,1729960,1729960#msg-1729960

As you have probably ascertained by now your CTX is working as it was designed. Most aftermarket headphones will not turn off the speakers sound when plugged in. There are a few ways to rectify this that have been posted here over the last 9 months.

I use the jumper wire fix, it took me about two minutes start to finish, but there are headphones made to be used with the CTX, SunRay is one Mfg. and the stock phones work as well.

If you have the WM10 wireless module, the headphones should work fine plugged into that. There is only a problem when being plugged directly to the CTX. However, here is a link to Digger's instructions on how to make a 6", or so, patch cord, that enables the headphones function properly. I made two of these and they work fine, but since I always use the WM10 wireless module, I haven't had to use them in the field......HH

It is a known issue.

Gray Ghost DMC headphones or the new Sun Ray CTX headphones (awesome phones) will work both with wireless module or plugged in directly. Or you can do one of the mods the other guys posted.

Hook up your WM 10 and then any headphones will work. If you do not have the WM 10 send me your address and I will send you an adaptor that will work. HH :minelab:
