He came back........

JB(MS)

New member
I made the two posts below on Carl's forum in August of 2003, the guy came back today........

Odd experience - Posted by JB(MS) on 8/23/2003, 5:05 pm

I had an encounter with a really strange character this morning. I was hunting a field that was used for makeshift football and baseball games from the late 1930's until around 1960, had been there maybe 10 minutes when a guy walked right in front of where I was swinging and stopped so I couldn't swing. I was off the road a couple of hundred yards, thought I was alone and never saw or heard him coming so it kinda surprised me. First thing he said was, "What kind of detector is that?" I told him a Shadow X5 and attempted to answer a couple of questions he asked about it but he didn't stop talking at the end of the questions. He said he had been detecting for 38 years and talked nonstop for 20-30 minutes about his detecting with a little religion and gobs of pure bullshit thrown in. He said he had found several thousand dollars in coins, thousands of pieces of gold jewelry including a ring with 57 diamonds on it, tons of Civil War relics, several caches and knew where a lot more were but didn't go get them because he didn't have time. I stopped trying to talk to him and just listened as long as I could take it. When I started walking to my truck, he followed along still talking a mile a minute. As I neared my truck I interrupted him, had to get loud to do it, told him I had to go and asked his name and where he was from as I had never seen him before. He said his name was Hastings, he was 63, a contractor from Hodges, Alabama, a small town about 50 miles from here, and he had just come down here to walk. Walk??? When I drove away he was walking away from the road toward some trees on the other side of the field. I've run into a lot of people while detecting, including some pretty odd ones, but that guy takes the prize. He looked really serious the whole time, never smiled or changed his expression at all except when he said God had spoken to him one day while he was detecting and told him to be a treasure hunter of people for the church instead of a treasure hunter of money. I checked the phone directory for Hodges, no Hastings listed. There's a listing for a Hastings General Contractor near Cullman but that's over 80 miles from Hodges. When I was leaving I passed an older car with an Alabama tag pulled off the road that was probably his but it still seems odd he could get so close without me seeing him.

What's even more strange about it is I related the story to the parents of the kids at my grandsons birthday party tonight and one lady said she passed that field about 5 this afternoon and the guy was still wandering around there. It was around 8 this morning when I was there so he evidently stayed all day or left and went back.

Haven't been able to get any detecting in lately because of my wifes medical problems but I took the Golden out this afternoon for a short hunt. Had just got there when the guy in the posts above drove up. He told me who he was again, Hastings and a contractor from Hodges, AL, and started asking questions but never gave me time to answer after the first two or three he asked. Without slowing down he then started talking about the Civil War battle at Brices Crossroads and how much he had hunted there, said the young woman who owned the entire battle site gave him permission to hunt it all. Brices Crossroads is only 30 miles or so from where I live, my son in law has family there, we detected there several times in the past and have been there a bunch of other times, so I broke in, told him Frank Snell's family owns most of the land where the battle took place and asked if he was sure he was talking about Brices Crossroad and not some other CW battle. He said yes, he was sure and described it but his description darn sure didn't fit Brices Crossroads. Then he asked if I went to church and started talking about the end of the world would be happening any time now. He had told me the other time that God told him to be a treasure hunter of people for the church instead of a treasure hunter of money. I interrupted him, told him I had to go and came home. As I was leaving I noticed a woman in his pickup, maybe she was his keeper or something. That guy is one strange dude.

Howdy JB
Next time you see him, just offer the loan of your backup machine, then tell him to show you how it's really done. Maybe a simple machine like a compadre, or some other turn on and go'er. Who knows, you might just witness a miracle, or some other strange happening. Heck! He might even dig up that golden pot at the end of a rainbow, or sumthin like that! It would be worth it just to see the look on his face as you hand him the divining detector and tell him to have at it. Then again, it might not be such a hot idea, you might not be able to pry it back out the guys hands. Have fun..........Hombre

...seemingly harmless. He has stated his case - who care's if he's odd, or even a liar? You dont need clever ripostes, oneliner's or one-upmanship coups with people like that.
Just politely tell him that you have limited time, so would like to not be disturbed any further and thank him for his time and opinions.
Then go back to what you were doing.

Do keep an eye on him , however and keep you cellie on stand by.

You may be right, but he's about as off the wall as anyone I've met. By the way, I gave you somewhat of an answer about the ground balance on the 1236 Fisher on Carl's forum:).

god man I know that bloke hes hounded me here in Australia , that guy can talk under water , thank god he's now in the US

I've met his sister... she was certain I was an agent for the gonvernment, monitoring leaking radiation. She was certain it was the reason for the voices in her head.
Same deal. "Thank you ma'am, but I have to get back to checking for radiation."
I'll check on the Fisher forum - and thanks.

That is a really strange situation there JB,but those kind of folks do show up once in a great while. When I think on it and have to remind myelf that God does use all kinds, and many times the ones we would less likely suspect. Not to say the old guy is an Angel, but they do come in all forms and always declare God, Most likely just a weird old guy walking his thoughts off, and I think it would be safe to say we all do some of that.

he evidently was relating that he had found all kind of treasure but his story didn't fit the facts.
He can't be doing God any favor by lieing about one subject.............

their excuse not to incline toward God,but others may recognize it as that frequent reminder from God that we all get. Whenever God is brought into the situation, it will always incline folks thinkig either toward or away from God, so the "favor" is from God,toward us, in His call to us, and we are certainly the ones more in need of "favor".

I think the man has problems ,needs help, but does not have the ability to ask, or face his problems...I knew a person who was terminal, and babbled all the time to keeep from thinking about it...Many of the actions you describe seem to fit.Anyway, I am sorry, in that, I don't know what to tell you, cordially NAD

While detecting once had a weird type approach me and declare he had detected, and found plenty. He also told me he had Civil War collector items, and revolutionary war collections.

I wrote him off as an odd ball..and most likely a Liar.

One day in my course of employment I ran across him again. He took me to his basement and showed me things I have only dreamed of finding. Thousands upon thousands of dollars of both wars items as he said he had.His basement was even a control ed environment for preservation of the priceless relics he had .

Wow I was wrong and thought maybe next time I will believe when someone offers me advice and a little history about what they have done..Just a thought !!!.

another 20-30 years of treasure hunting, then growing old, strolling out in a park on day...you find you are this old man you are now talking about.

I am sure many of you old timers who have been detecting since the old glory days of virgin grounds, , treasure hunting, digging for old bottles, have many stories to tell......many today would think your nuts and lying.

Now if you didn't know who Mel Fisher was, he saw you detecting on a beach, he came up to you and started babbling about all the gold chains, coins and jewels here's just found off the coast you were standing upon....................................

We found a picnic ground on the site of a demolished orphan home. Right next to the main road. It was overgrown. A few wheaties came out, then Indian head pennies, mercury dimes, barber dimes, half dimes, two cent pcs., barber quarters, some seated coins, silver dollars, gold jewelry rings. All in an area about 200 x 100'. We cleaned this place out good, a signal about every foot, nothing more than 6" deep. I came in with lawn mowers and sickles. We all cleaned the place up, actually looked like a park again. We hunted here for 3 months and figured it was hunted out. Came back the following spring and found more stuff, this went on for three years. Then everyone found out about our spot....hunted to death. Then the land was bought up and a drug rehab center was built on the property. The end.

The above is a true story, all you have to do is mention the orphanage on Harlem Rd by Mineral Springs in West Seneca, NY to any of the older members of the Niagara Frontier Relic Hunters, Steven Bah....orig. found the honey hole area. We were detecting buddies.

Here's a google street map of the area, some of the trees still remain on the side of the road, just left of the rehab center driveway.

Aren't google inter- active street maps cool. All you have to do is move your mouser cursor around the pictures and see a 360 degree view.

OK guys how many of you have a story???

Sane or not that was what he was doing. He wanted you gone from that field.

I've run into a simular situation with another detectorist who had laid claim to a particular park. You could see it in their eyes. Conversation was polite but incredibly lenthy all designed to waste my time. I out lasted this particular visitor as I wasn't under any time constraints that day but I've had others where I had to do just like you did and pack it up and move to another location and wait to come back later.

I have a friend that has to talk and he'll walk with you and talk, talk, talk, but he won't intentionally try to hamper what you are doing. You can tell the difference.

Good luck on your next hunt there.

Mike

Again, just be polite and tell him you'd like to be left alone to go about your hobby. It isn't that hard to do and he'll get the point.
I'd tend to side with Mike, on this. Hungry to share stories, maybe. Loonie or messenger from God, perhaps. Jealous of your presence, possibly.
Regardless, he was "in your space," as they say. You have the right to not chat it up with the guy.

Are you wearing a headset?
Make a motion you can't hear them........if :tesoro:

Wasn't expecting so many responses, but I think if you guys had been there you would have most likely concluded the same thing I did. I've been detecting in this area for almost 40 years and have run into all kind of people, including quite a few out and out wierdo's, but never anyone like that guy. I don't doubt some of the things he said was true, he talked enough that it was evident he's fairly knowledgable about detectors and detecting, and I may be wrong but the only people I've seen who's demeanor and facial expressions were like he exhibited were mentally unbalanced. Hopefully all with go well with him, and maybe it'll be five more years before I run into him again:).
