Let's recall end of World War II

1 2 next The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Dade Battlefield Historic State Park will host a celebration commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the end of World War II.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Dade Battlefield Park in Bushnell.

Re-enactors will portray the various nations and military branches involved in the war. Visitors can view living history encampments, military vehicles and other military equipment of that period to illustrate the soldiers' lives in the 1940s. Visitors also can mingle with re-enactors, observe uniforms and weapons, and enjoy music and food.

The cost is $2 per vehicle (no more than eight people) and $1 for individual walker or bicyclist.



The park, which is a national historic landmark, is at 7200 County Road 603, off C.R. 476 between Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 301. Take Exit 314 from I-75 and follow the signs.

Antique-car cruise-in

The Uniques and Antiques Car Club will have its monthly cruise-in from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wendy's, U.S. Highway 27, Leesburg.

Registration is free. Music, awards and prizes are provided.

American Legion barbecue

American Legion Post 219 will serve barbecue chicken and pork dinners from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the post, 102 S. Dixie Ave., Fruitland Park. Cost is $7 for dinners; $6 for pork sandwich plate; and $5 for pork sandwich only.

Candidates' forum

Residents are invited to meet and greet candidates of local races at a forum at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 in the cafeteria at Spring Creek Elementary School, 44440 Spring Creek Road, Paisley.

The Northeast Lake County Chamber of Commerce is the sponsor.

Light refreshments will be served.


Obama supporters to meet

*Jocelyn Slowey, field organizer for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign, will have an organizational meeting for The Villages area from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Oxford Community Center, 4027 County Road 106, Oxford. The center is one block south of C.R. 466.
