Hawaii

The wife and I are planning a trip to Maui and the Big Island next month. I had thought to take the Excalibur along. Does anyone out there have any advice on good beaches, tips, prohibited areas, anything a haole ought to know or be aware of?

Beware hunting in the water. The recent rains have caused millions of gallons of raw sewage to be dumped into the water. There have been four cases of "flesh-eating" virus on Maui and Oahu. No JOKE!!
We usually go every year, and we're not going this year. Not even sure about next year, due to water hunting involving digging into the bottom..

From the high water mark out into the ocean is ok. Do not dig in any parks, state or county. Ok to swing a detector in them just NO! digging. Raw sewaqe? yep plenty to go around. Do you want to live forever?

Thanks for the info. I did not know anything about the flesh eating virus, so I did some web surfing. I also found out there has been 92 confirmed cases of dengue fever, for those folks who did not get into the water. I learned you can tell the native Hawaiians by their t-shirts, "My Ancestors Ate Captain Cook". The place sounds like a paradise. I can hardly wait.

Been shooting the beaches on Maui for three days on vacation. Ran into a local in Wailea who gave me some tips -- I was getting beeps when the coil hit wet sand. He said there were a lot of minerals and to swing 8-10" above the sand. My grandson and I found "pirate nails" and lots of beer bottle caps -- no rings yet -- and pieces of irregular shaped lead. He said he's only been detecting there for two years, but has been told the lead comes from fishing -- looks like melted scraps to me. Stay away from places on public beaches where fires are built -- you find all the nails from the used lumber!

All the beaches are open and no one has said anything about health issues. And there has been no public warning on radio or TV news. I'm sure the Health Dept would let us know if we were in any danger. Plus, the locals are swimming, too.

News tonight listed a couple beaches (not on Maui) affected by a broken sewage pipe. It was on Ch 9 (out of Honolulu) so I assume it to be on the main island. But call ahead if you are concerned, so you can adjust your itinerary. Hope you hunting is a bounty, mately.

Take care, and God Bless!
