Having Trouble with my Sov GT

Just got a new/used GT and it worked fine for a couple days. The guy sold it to me at precisely the right time...wouldn't you know. Not his fault though. He sold me a working detector.

Today at the house, I turned it on without the coil connected and got a squeal from the speaker so I knew it was working. Then I turned it off and turned it back on and NOTHING. Not even a peep. I charged the batteries thinking that maybe when I had bought the detector the batteries were already low. But still...nothing. I hooked up the coil and still nothing. It is almost like the On-Off switch is not working or making connection.

I sprayed the ON-OFF switch with contact cleaner and worked it back and forth a few times but still DOA.

I'm posting this just in case somebody has had this situation before and maybe has some suggestions before I send it off.

I'm kind of resigned though to having to send it to Minelab for repair. Can anybody give me a ballpark figure on how much you think the the bill will be?

well i have heard that you should not turn them on without a coil connected as it sends a signal with no where to go,kinda like a CB radio keyed without an antenna connected would blow out the final transistor..but i must say iv done the same thing in the past with no problems. try it with head phones on to make sure its not just the speaker blown out!

Yea, make sure your headphones/speaker are working by switching between those. Sounds to me though like you've got a bad battery or battery connection. Remove the holder and inspect the contacts on the bottom of the box. Clean with an eraser from a pencil and then some rubbing alchohol. That's a common problem with cell phones as the connector gets dirty. Did you also try putting regular batteries in the other holder to try those? If you don't have a second regular holder to try stick a volt meter on the two battery leads of the rechargable pack. Voltage on a freshly charged pack should be at least 12 to 14 volts or so. If it's below (I think, anybody?) 10.5 volts the regulator will not function. Does anybody know what the usual voltage cutoff is for the voltage regulator because I've been wondering that myself and am too lazy to draw down the battery to see exactly where it cuts off.

Thanks Guys for your help.

I checked the battery pack with a volt meter and the voltage is about 15V so I don't think that is the problem. Contacts are clean and I tried it with the headphones. Nada. I'm just going to send it in but before I do I was wondering if there is any advantage to sending the coil with the detector box. I've read that there may be some advantage in that they can match the tuning of the detector to the coil. Is there anything to that?

Do they have a standard fee for repairs or is that based on problem? Also wondering if they will touch any modded Sovereigns that have say an external pinpoint jack installed, just for future reference.

Thanks. If not there are plenty of guys out there who fix them I think. Nothing wrong with mine yet but it's good to know.
