is this because i have my settings bad? SEN set too high? running between 10-17 or so same targets seem to give different readings at different angles. is this normal? never know what I'm digging!!

it is something that is making me not enjoy it like i should. i really hope that there is a solution........hint.... hint

given much information other than your numbers are bouncing around. Did this happen only at one site or all the sites that you are hunting? Have you got access to a coin garden where you can do a controlled test to see if it still occurs? Have you talked to anyone from Minelab?

Often when the numbers on a metal detector using the number system to I.D. the target, a situation where the numbers bounce back and forth is an indication that your metal detector is reading more than one target, thus the reason for my question. Kelley (Texas) :)

The only time I notice a stable reading is when I am hunting over bark chips in a playground. Then if I hit a dime, bang, it is a steady 39. A penny is a steady 36, etc... When I move into the grass(and I have properly GBed too!) a dime jumps from 42 to 30, anywhere in that range. I have now tried turning the sens. way down (the 10 range), so I will continue to do that to see if it stabilizes.

My battery level was down to one mark when the numbers started jumping. I changed batteries and it resolved the problem....Don

bouncing of the upper numbers, and just a tab of bouncing on the lower numbers, usually in the pull tab/nickel range. I have noticed no bouncing between numbers that have been caused by the sensitivity settings as long as the sensitivity setting is not set too high to cause the X-Terra to become unstable. You may be hunting in soil with high mineralization and as such, you may not be able to operate at a high sensitivity setting before your X-Terra becomes unstable with the resulting bouncing of the numbers.

If you are using the X-Terra 50 or 70, make sure that you are correctly ground balanced, and the sensitivity setting is set properly. I would think that hunting in the bark chips would be almost equal to an air test because the target may be setting on top of the ground. When hunting and getting a response to a buried target, then mineralization will become a bigger factor and you may not be able to run your sensitivity as high and remain stable.

For peace of mind, you might want to call a Minelab Service Center and get some suggestions. Maybe Monte will read your post and give you a good explanation. I do wish you the best. Kelley (Texas) :)
