Having long arms extended the arm-rest a little

Old California

New member
Having long arms extended the arm-rest back 1.25" inches, using a Recon arm-rest modified it so now the arm-rest slides further back flush with the rear housing yet still retains the locking feature.

Just what the doctor ordered, due to having long arms the ATX feels so much better.

On another note, recently picked up the 8" mono coil and boy am I ever so glad I did.

Those of you holding out on the 8" coil, its a winner and gets both good depth and super sensitivity for an 8" coil.

I have not gone done to look at the ATX, but from the photo it I don't see any difference from the Recon, except for the plastic you removed from the arm rest. Is there a difference between the ATX and Recon that one would not be able to modify the ATX's arm rest in the same area? Another photo showing the underside of the modified arm rest would be helpful. GREAT IDEA! Thanks

Thanks WW,

No difference between the two with housing and arm-cup, I would recommend getting another one from

Paul, first of all, thanks for all your information on the ATX. I was going to modify my ATX to use the Infinium 5x10 DD coil. I mostly prospect, so I really need a coil for the tight places. After seeing your comment above, now I'm not so sure, maybe the 8" mono is the way to go.

Have you had the 8" mono long enough to tell if there is a big difference in sensitvity/depth compared to the 5x10 DD?

I see pros and cons for both, the 8" mono is waterproof, but gets the same coil falsing as the stock coil. The 5x10 DD does not have the coil falsing, but is not waterproof. I planned on using a sealant around the 5x10 connection. Maybe not the best solution, but good enough for 1 - 2 foot submersion.

Thanks for any input you may have.

Hey Paul,

Love the modification! What are your impressions with using the 8" Mono coil with the ATX. Do you have a lot of issues with falsing? Also, what are you opinions on the ATX compared to the SDC? Do you think the SDC will find nuggets as deep as the ATX? I guess what I am getting at is that I am trying to decide if I should keep my ATX, which I believe gives me more variety with the different coils but heavier weight using the standard and large mono coils, or changing to the SDC, with its les falsing and supposed better ergonomics when swinging the machine? Any opinion?

Thanks,

Great pictures, thanks. They clear up all questions on how you did the mod.

ON INFINIUM COILS:

Several years ago when I bought my Infinium, Garrett told me that the small white DD coils WERE water tight and were good for shallow water detecting. BUT because they are not epoxy filled they do not put the waterproof label on them. If they did users would go diving with them and the pressure would cave them in. Of course because they are not filled, they are more susceptible to cracking or wearing through by hitting on rocks or scuffing on the sand. Use a coil cover, I have and have had no problems in 8 years of shallow water detecting. The 3X7 is my favorite coil while detecting in rocky rivers were the tubers enjoy their summer sport.

Hi Steve,

With the limited time I currently have with the 8" mono, already see an advantage it has over the smaller Infinium DD coil.

Gets greater depth on all targets, especially the smaller finds. Sure, You'll loose the iron check feature but still have audio and use it if going after low conductive.

Must have coil, no question the 8" mono will serve you well. Plus, its already shaft mounted for quick connection.

Take care,
Paul

Hello TH,

Have no idea with the SDC 2100 how it compares with the ATX but have read positive reviews on both, can't beat the price on the ATX and when fitted with the 8" mono coil this may be the only coil arrangement for most pi hunters.

Don't have the 8" mono coil falsing issue I read on some of the other post, so far its working like it should.

Is the falsing from touching the coil on something or from the ground giving off a false signal?

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for sharing WW,

I knew they had to be waterproof to a certain degree, I've never have leakage issues with mine both of the smaller DD coils work great for shallow water hunting.

But now after using the 8" mono, no need to use one of the smaller DD coils in water anymore.

Thanks again for sharing,
Paul
