... but today was a good day! Found a 1920 Buffalo in the same hole as a 1921 Merc! Also found a 1944-D Merc and a 1946 Wheatie along with a few memorial cents and two religous pendants; one copper and one silver. the silver one has 1878-1897 dates on it. Not bad for a "hunted out" park. I found the Merc's and the buff in the first 15 minutes I was there, then it went completely DEAD!! I don't quite understand that.

Here's some pics of the 1921 Merc, what would you grade it? Granted, the wrapped bands are faint, but they're visible. It should be a F to VF wouldn't you think? That puts it in the 125.00 to 275.00 range, if I was able to sell it for that much...??

The mercs were cleaned with soap/water only... didn't clean the buff yet.

Wow, that's some really nice stuff. Did those coins come out looking that or were they cleand? The soil in your area must have a very low mineral content because those coins look really great? Congrats and happy hunting.

They came out like that for the most part. I used a little water and some soap to get some of the dirt off, but they were still shining when I pulled them out. I've only lived in St. Louis for 4 years now, but my experience here has been that silver usually comes out looking good, with almost no need for cleaning. There are some areas with lots of iron that tends to discolor the coins, but the place I pulled these ones from was pretty clean.

Would you believe that all of the coins were only 2 to 3 inches down? I'm going back there this weekend, most definitely.
