All the time I spent picking out my new MD I finally narrowed it down to,,, and bought a new Silver uMax,,,,,,,,, then all this talk about how the Compadre is the little surprise in the Tesoro line-up,,,,makes me think I got the wrong one THANKS SkiWhiz,,,,I read a lot of your post here and other forums,,and respect your opinion,,,did I make a mistake by getting the uMax ? I had a small budget for my first machine,,,I will be upgrading in the near future. The Compadre and uMax where the only two in the Tesoro line in my price range for now,,,,,,AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (read -pulling ones hair out )

get a 5.75" concentric coil and your good to go.
The Silver is a good all around machine that will go deeper and has the ability to change coils
to cover different hunting conditions. The first time out with my Silver at the beach found
gold that paid for my used Eldorado.
I'm sure everyone at one point thinks they bought the wrong detector.......
Save the money you find with the Silver and then buy a Compadre.

Nothing wrong with the Silver

I STILL have my Silver umax and it's a great coin detector. Don't be discouraged because the Compadre is really a SPECIALTY detector, in my opinion. It shines where iron nails and small iron can hide some gold targets. The Silver is just set a little too high in min. disc. and the iron can override some targets. It comes with a price-teeny pieces of foil, the smallest metal brads you've ever seen, small bits of metal that you can hardly see. That's why, however that it's such a great gold detector. That's why a lot of folks restrict their searching to tot lots, etc., where the recovery isn't so time consuming and the finds usually are plenty, and there's more of a chance for gold. The nice thing, though, is that you CAN turn up the disc to match the Silver umax. The Compadre will also find small gold chains that the Silver won't even beep on-other than that, the normal targets are found comparably with both machines.

One of the best under 250 detectors out there. I run my tesoros just above iron on disc, when hunting gold. If it is really trashy, buy a 5.5 coil. There are no good detectors out there to use in high trash, unless you have a 4 inch or 5.5 inch coil. Pulled some impressive finds out of the ground next to pull tabs using the 5.5 coil. My last find was a 1925 D merc, mixed in with a lot of trash.

Thank you all for your comments. It has helped lower my heart rate back to normal and give me a calming feeling about my new uMax, I have had NOTING but good experiences with it and have found many good targets. And as the gentleman stated above,,,,,when I find targets as small as a human hair ( single strand from wire rope) I feel I am covering the area very well indeed,,,,thanks again all HH

Of all the currently produced models, the Compadre is probably the quietest and has the better adjustment of the Discriminate level to deal with the common iron nails. That, and the easy-to-use single knob make is very basic but it works.

The Silver

I am very happy with the Silver,,,,,, and the ability to change coils is huge IMHO
