have you ever been "skunked?"

hi everybody, i don't hear this term too often... "skunked" on a hunt. it means that you found absolutely nothing! i can't say i've ever been skunked before, thank god, but i've come close a time or two.

the first time it almost happened to me, i had been drinking a couple of beers beforehand, it being very hot. an hour went by, i'm just burning up, sweat pouring, and frustrated at no beeps! man, what's going on here, i thought. this ground sucks! moral of the story? it really helps to at least turn your machine on, doofus. and keep alcohol out of the equation, too.

the second time, i was using my old white's coinmaster 3 on a hot spot i had found some real goodies in lately and was rarin' to go! oh, i could see it now... more silver merc dimes and maybe a quarter or two! but, i had forgotten all about the loose headphone connection to the machine, it had pulled out part way so it didn't register on either end! another half hour down the drain. oops.

the third time, i hunted around an old church that had been demolished and really thought i could beat the other local boys to it. i had found some really good civil war relics there over a quick two days, so i figured, well, why not hit it a third time? there's rain in the forecast, so what? it doesn't look like it's gonna do much. well, i got the wife to drop me off, and found nothing for about 45 minutes. so much for beating the local boys to it. the clouds were really gathering now, and were black! oh, oh. the only beep of that very short day in the pouring rain was a deep plain shield union button, then my machine died! i swear it was the deepest thing i had EVER dug! and in the middle of a raging storm.

saved by the bell! my wife laughed at me for days over that. that poor, cold, wet, shivering husband of hers had to call her to come pick him up hiding under the only tree in the middle of that field! it was comical. you'd have laughed your a** off at me! but, like a true hunter, all i was really worried about was the machine and the condition of the button! hair dryers can do wonders to wet machines! hh,

Those are some great stories Gray. I have been nearly skunked a time or two but i justify lousy finds with the good exercise and fresh air. You know its kind of funny that I know I have more change in the cup holder of my truck than I will find in clad on most hunts but there is something about bringing to the light of day something forever lost by society, no matter how little value, and the slim chance that maybe it is something great. And I have been on a few hunts in rugged terrain that left me sore for days with pulled muscles. So I guess to me, there are so many great things about hunting , including the hunts with lousy finds, that I really dont think i've ever been skunked or ever will be skunked. Congrats to the rest of you also for choosing to partake in an activity that gets you away from the TV and out moving around. :detecting:  TC & HH, JJ

I started a hunt once without having the detector on....took me 20 minutes to figure out why I was not getting any hits...lol

I think my worst hunt was 0.11 in clad and a fistfull of pulltabs.

If I'm not getting any noise for a while I usually check for a signal with my ring.

Came real close a few times myself!! start digging everything in sight or move to a hot spot for at least clad. The wife always asks how I did and when I show her sometimes there's a a laugh with "Still will have to go to work Monday. Just not enough to quit the job yet huh". LOL Still love being out there swinging though. It's the dream of "WHAT IF TODAYS THE DAY?" You know buying into the dream is half the fun and just keeps me swinging!:detecting:

yeah I thought I would make a killing off of tot lots the first time I ever hunted. I only had 3 hours before work [so what] I had planned my great treasure hunt the night before at work...I had it all covered. The first 2 lots produced nothing but trash [not even a Hotwheels car or something]. The 3rd had to have the heaviest concentration of rusty nails I have ever seen. On the way to the 4th I got stuck in traffic[I hated Houston traffic]. So I showed up at work late, covered in mud and dripping wet. The Boss could see that my day was not going well and offered that it was not to late to call out sick. I took the offer and thanked her.

I have had absolutely no luck in the tot lots around my hood...either someone else is hunting them, or no one looses anything there...???

The Time I was really "skunked" was when I had just started detecting a place just South of the Yosemite Park boundry, and I stirred up a nest of Meat Eater Bees! Boy, did they ever "skunk" my day!
I've never been back to that place......................either!

I went to a spot that used to have 3 Cistern wells back in the late 1800s and Early 1900s....Could drink the water from them back then...now there is a Zoo above them, and the ground water is all tainted...Thought I would be finding some killer Silver and old coppers...not a chance!!!...area was backfilled in a long time ago with dirt from a demolition site...all full of old metal water pipe and sewage pipe....looks like they tore up some streets in NY City, and shipped all the crap up here for landfill...Typical of what I find in areas around here...No virgin land left!!... :rage:
All I kept pulling out with my White's Classic II SL was large pieces of pipe...
