Have had my cz6 for 3 weeks now

and am still trying to learn what it is saying to me. Been reading up on it anywhere I can find tips. Today I concentrated on what they call whispers. Kept digging 6 to 8 inch holes only to find rusty nails. Got tiring with the hard ground we have. On the last place we hunted got another "whisper" and decided to dig it up. 6 to 8 inches down was a rusty nail, again. Five feet away got the exact same whisper and gave it a go again, at about 7 inches this is what I found.

Got to learn those whispers and what they are telling me. Tips anyone?

I had a LOT of hours w/ a CZ6. I also dug a lot of nails, but after I started going to "0" disc, could tell the coins from them, most of the time. Mine showed some IH and older wheats w/ patina as zinc but I learned quick what they really were due to depth.

I'd be lying if I told you I hunted all the time at "0". I'd start out that way but eventually get sick of listening to all the junk and the flip the disc to nickels and keep going. When I heard those whispers I'd go back to "0". I dug a few silver dimes and quarters at an unbelievable depth w/ it and got those sweet 4 way silver sounding hits. I found if there [1] wasn't a 4way hit and [2] any iron buzz w/ the high tone, it was almost always a nail. A 4way hit w/ iron buzz was worth digging, usually a coin by a nail. Good Luck, swell machine.

Edited to ad: Tom Dankowski video is a good one. One point he makes in it that might apply to you is if there's an iron buzz and a high tone, he only digs when high tone is over 50%.

I'm sure there are others that can give you better advice, this just seemed to work ok for me.

is iron next to a good target, and you have your sensitivity set at two, you might not get the good target next to iron target. The way the circuit is set up, if you run it at "0" you will hear both. Also, a tip for the deep nails is to do an x pattern, if you have your disc. set to zero and you check the target in one direction, you might get a double beep or even a null, cross it at 90 degrees and you will hear it, most likely its iron. Good Luck

Nice for one to give his settings but works for him may not work for you. For instance what you discriminate depends on what your looking for, volume at 10 basically lets you hear the real low audio hits and helps you hear audio better for ground balance procedure while setting 5 or under gives you a modulated effect(shallow high audio...deep low audio) and considering the ground balance doesn't matter what number it stops on as long as its properly ground balanced and depending on your area should land close to a specific number most of the time but can vary several numbers depending how far you travel to detect. All in all relative volume matter of preference and same goes for discrimination as many run at various settings. For those not aware google Mikes CZ page as it has many tips especially how to avoid those nasty deep nails.

prodrigsr,
Main reason I asked about settings was to see if you were running autotune or discriminate. I have a fair amount of time on a CZ6a but not on a CZ3. I was thinking you were listening for whispers in autotune. I generally don't hunt in autotune so couldn't help much with how that would sound.

When running discrimination on the CZ, I have found that if I swing at moderate to faster swings, nails frequently sound high tone. If I hit a high tone target with the CZ, I slow the sweep down to very slow and maybe six to eight inches back and forth over the target to see if it still goes high tone or goes all low tone. I too like the discriminator at 0. It lets me listen to low tone (iron) so when I sweep slow, I can hear the iron low tone or coin high tone better. If after slowing the sweep speed and distance down I hear high tone, I dig.

Dan-PA is right that everyone has their own setting preferences. Mikes CZ page also has links to other reading besides his own observations.

CZ's are nice detectors. Good luck with yours.

You know what works for me for questionable high tone signals, i pinpoint the exact center and then do small circles from the center of the target out i can usually tell if it is long like a nail or round like a coin.
Some times the pinpoint will not be consistent with where the regular disc tone pinpoints . None of these things work perfect other variables come in to play such as how trashy a site is, the bent in a circle nail and the dreaded washer, but we have to do all we can to put the odds in our favor. Another thing i try is to detect those iron infested areas during very dry conditions less of a halo around the iron Just a few of my observations over the years HH.

Tymstamon,
Very nice technique suggested with that little circle! I will use that! From what I have dug, I don't think I detect quite as deep in very dry as I do in moist soil. But I find I am at about the same settings. Do you set anything different in dry vs damp?
tvr

TVR, my settings don't really vary because of the soils moisture content. but the sites i detect do. for instance i will detect in the woods when its dry so that i won't damage any turf. One thing i have had success with, is finding areas that were flooded in the spring after these spots dry up its very easy to detect, and you will find lots of stuff there. you see here in the Detroit area guys will detect the old parks in the spring and fall [they feel safer then] both times of the year that are wet, i detect the parks in the driest times and get in areas they can't. I ground balance a lot and detect very slow. My settings for clean areas are sens-4 disc-0 vol-10 headphones-5 trashy areas sens-2 8in coil sens-4[ with the hockey puck] vol-4, headphones-10 i only disc iron. the volume at 4 helps me in trash to tell the depth. And i always use the bobbing coil ground balance HH.

Have read pro's and cons and experienced them also...For instance wet ground will accentuate good targets but also the bad targets causing masking while the dry ground will do neither so pro's and cons either way...Wet ground usually allows me to go deeper and of course digging is easier but have also went deep in dry ground so pays to experiment..
