Talked to my brother in law this weekend. We were on the subject of gold and silver rings and were they show up on the ace 250.Would like to know were most of everyone finds there rings on the ace 250,he hunts mostly coin mode, i switch between custom and all metal and relic.thanks for the help.

I mostly hunt in Jewelry mode and rings and other jewelry I've found seem to show up in the low end of of the ID range nickle area or there abouts and signals often jump all over. It's always a pleasant surprise to dig trash that isn't trash.

I'd suggest just putting some of his own family jewelry on the floor or ground just to see how the 250 responds to various metals, sizes and shapes of this stuff. My experience is that jewelry is far less repeatable on the ID scale than coins so I say ... "when it doubt, dig it out" :)

Sometimes after a tiring day of digging I will use custom mode with everything lower than a dime discriminated out. This has worked well for me and in the last hour of hunting I've usually been fortunate enough to score a lot of dimes and quarters to round out a day of hunting.

They can hit anywhere from zinc-penny on up the scale.

One manufacturer (Fisher), printed the results of a test where 259 gold rings, all different sizes and alloys were scanned and the results were as follows:

FOIL: 92 (36%)
Round Tab: 51 (20%)
Nickel: 26 (10%)
Square Tab: 75 (29%)
Clad Coin: 15 (6%)

I know that this adds up to 101%... for my part, the nicest (most valuable) rings that I've dug were lady's rings with nice stones. They hit like foil on my machines (just under nickel on the 250).

If you dig for foil, as I often do, you will avoid the bulk of the trash and the trash that fools you is usually shallow and easy to recover. Just my $.02.

The higher the purity of gold...24K, 18K..the lower it will read on the machine. The lower purity ...10K....14K, the higher it will read. However, lower purity gold is mixed with other alloys, like copper and silver, so this can effect the readings too!

I have found two gold rings with my ACE 250. They both showed up on the upper scale as a nickel or a pull tab and bounced back and forth. Silver rings of which there are three, showed up on the lower end of the scale as a dime or quarter and bounced back and forth from dime to quarter. I have found several silver earrings and they show up much as a silver ring. Monty

Bill... that is true... a thin gold ring, the kind that have a diamond, can register low... between foil and nickel.
