The GTA 1000 is definitely a better machine. Try to get a GTAx model, as it has the Power Master Circuit and should give you an additional 20% in depth. But, even without the Power Master circuit, it will go deeper then the 400. The 1000 model is more stable and better with discrimination. Now have you thought about any other current models that Garrett is carrying? The ACE 250 is a hot little machine and does a lot more then the 400. You would also be getting a 2 year warranty if you bought it brand new. I'll leave you a link to Garretts Web Page, so you can do some further reading on the various models.
