Have a confession, Been cheating but the T-2 but me back into perspective.

Lately, I've been using other detectors comparing them to the T-2 or using them for other types of hunting. Got to admit the Whites MXT with the 6X10" DD coil sure is a great detector riding right behind the T-2 on separation and recovery speed (almost as fast) but the T-2 does have an edge.

Here the past couple of days I'm starting to assume the MXT is just as good as the T-2, But after today the T-2 quickly took charge proving it does have an edge. So I hit a demo again with the area dating back to 1853, Nothing old surfaced from that era except for a couple of pistol balls and some late 1890 to early 1920's stuff.

I'm beat, Covered the same iron ridden ground four times last night and this morning, Every square foot covered with three detectors one of them with two different size coils. The area was a strip of dirt recently scraped, Eight feet wide by about 80 yards in length. The surrounding demo area now has fresh top soil so this was the last area to show promise, Not allot of targets and was hoping for a seated but still some good finds.

(1) First searched with the MXT fitted with the 6X10" DD coil,
(2) Second trip was the MXT again only with this hunt used the 4X6" DD coil,
(3) Third trip used the T-2,
(4) Forth and last trip used the Explorer SE fitted with the 5" SunRay coil,

The first and second trip in with the MXT using both coils (6X10" and then the 4X6") pulled out the Standing liberty quarter and Chinese coin with a total of 12 conductors.

Then switched to the T-2 and it did a remarkable job of getting stuff missed by the MXT, A total of 21 conductors. Truly amazing!

Then, Last was the Explorer SE fitted with a SunRay 5" coil.........Only one conductor was recovered......Yes only ONE conductor which was an old bullet casing. How the T-2 missed that one conductor surprised me. Not saying the Explorer is not a good detector which it is but for relic hunting other detectors shine better, Explorer for deep park silver is an area it does much better.

As big the T-2 coil is it sure gets fantastic separation, I can see how a smaller coil would help but only in areas the larger coil can't get into.

Some of my friends from my area do read the T-2 forum so if anyone from my area reads this post please feel free and hit the same area I covered and try to pull out finds I may have missed, Let me know if you do. The area I searched is within the red markers on the picture running from both ends of the fence, Allot of iron in here.

Boy your sure one hard working son of a gun. Did you notice a major change in depth with the T2 and were its readings accurate?
That sure looks like Commercial St. in San Diego. Mike T

:cheekkiss: OC, You're my kind of detectorist!

Thanks for the report. I only wish I lived near your HQ.
I'd 'caddy' for you anytime on a venture like that.
"Participation beats speculation".

If you get the same kind of opportunity again, how about Minlabing it first and T twoing it last?

I'd be willing to put $10 on the T2 getting the 'nitty-gritty' that the SE misses........??

If the T2 ever gets a smaller DD coil, I think it will leave most other detectors gasping for finds in such circumstance. (More than it does now!)...MattR.UK.

Great report Paul. Those are some cool tests.

Did you notice the ground phase reading and the FE2 number?

Be interesting to see a comparision between detectors on a buried Nickel and a quarter at that site. Disturbed ground test yes but equal. I have a stainless steel hole hog that's great way to plant a coin without disturbing the ground very much.

Thanks for the reply Mike,

The demo at this area has allot of iron mixed in with the dirt so getting full depth potential with any detector is tough, But some patchy areas will allow good depth. Visual reading bounced around with all three detectors, But most of the time the readings were dead on and those that weren't had both scratchy audio and visual ID bouncing around especially at the end when the signals were sparse.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Matt,

I was thinking the same as you, I didn't intend on using the SE at this strip of demo until the end after I had cleaned up with the T-2. In all honestly the T-2 is a much better detector over the SE for these type of hunting conditions including relic hunting, Goes to show the T-2 did an excellent job cleaning up leaving just one good signal for the SE. Now I am looking forward to getting a smaller coil for the T-2 when they are available, That should even enhance the T-2 in trashy areas.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Frank,

I just noticed it ground balanced in the low seventies, But this area does have poor ground conditions.

Most likely a buried nickel would respond about the same on a quarter with the T-2, Even though the T-2 operates at 13kHz it still does well on high coins and so does the MXT.

Both detectors are a joy to use, but for getting stuff missed by other detectors it appears the T-2 comes out slightly ahead.

Thanks again,
Paul

Paul, I took the T2 out for turf hunting to see how eight hours of schools would feel with this detector. I did not have as much fun as I do with my 6000 XL PRO or my Fisher 70 Pro. These are fun machines for turf hunting. One school I hit was in Lodi off HWY 99. The detector was very jumpy and chattery. I did everything I read on how to calm it down. I did your post where you said sometimes you have to take out the backup detector. So I just moved on. The other school was a lot nicer to hunt the T2 was tame and I could run it at about 80. I had to use two tones because with anymore tones I was hearing too much info.

So far I have not really used the T2 for relic hunting...I have my Gold Scanner coming back from repair next week and want to do some tests. I can say that I looked at you finds and I am digging the same stuff you are except the old coins. I hate the pull tabs and flip tops they read all over the place sometimes and come in strong. And small shreds of aluminum...man it hits on that a lot even in lots. Sometims I think the meter gets in the way.

Anyway I have to find a good lot to hunt so I can report on the T2 for me as a relic machine. I have to remember that you have told me you did a ton of trash and I have seen the back of your truck..Would love to try your MXT or M6.:look: You can borrow my Gold Scanner if you want!

Hey Lawrenzo,

Cool seated, That must be the seated you fund near the old bridge.

You're right, The T-2 hits on the smallest shreds of aluminum sounding like a loud signal. In the older areas it's important to dig everything even the signals showing pull tabs and flip tops, Dig everything to the point nothing is left from these old vacant lots or older settlements out in the country. Eventually, You won't mind digging up allot of trash for that special find that will eventually surface. Digging up trash will be a normal routine all part of metal detecting, Most of the time you'll go home with a pouch full of trash and you'll be ok with that.

You live in an old gold country area dating back to the mid 1840's, Area of the first gold pioneers. Your area has allot of history and many areas now abandoned many of which are now vacant lots or plowed fields, Allot of old pre-1890 schools too now under plowed fields or out in an open meadow with no traces of an old school being there.

I would like to try out your Gold Scanner and you can borrow my MXT.....I'll get some places for us to hunt in your area, I have access to all the old schools and some other interesting structures and settlements of California most of which are now under plowed fields or an open meadow. We'll walk right up to each site with my GPS and hopefully get permission from the land owners.

See you soon,
Paul (Ca)

Hello Paul, Jeff and I hunted there last week, Jeff using the EX2 and I the T2. I was hoping to pull out 1 more seated from this site but it did not happen. In the stretch of dirt you are talking about is where I found my finds. Too bad they did not scrape off 1 more layer where the old stuff is. My finds are mainly buttons and knob covers. The center large piece is a pocket watch fob with a deer/mountain scene, pretty nice up close. 1.25 Chinese coins, 1 pistol ball. I don't know how many people had already hunted here before Jeff and I but there was a lot of filled in holes (nice to see for a change). I was very pleased with my finds considering all the iron in the soil. Thanks for looking, Batty[attachment 37315 Scan-1.jpg]

Hello Mark,

You did good getting those finds in the attached pic, I think I was there the same night just after you left when Jeff was there but didn't hunt this strip of dirt until the other night and yesterday morning. If you can, Try to hit this strip again and I'll buy you lunch if you can pull out a good conductor. From the strip running beside the chain link fence end to end.

Here are the coins I got from there the past four trips, hit every area with the strip in the pic above last.

2 V-Nickels,
1 Chinese coin,
1 Bar token,
1 barber dime,
1 standing liberty quarter,
And several wheat pennies, a couple smashed flat from the local train,

I think Denny and I hit it first on this recent demo, We covered our holes well. Dennis may have hit it earlier but I didn't notice any holes before we hunted the demo lot, He arrived later that evening.

You're right, I'd wish someone would have got a seated this past week but no one did. If memory serves me well, You recovered 3 seated, Denny found 2 seated and I got 4 seated from this same area last year. I feel it's over now, For this particular site that is :)

Almost forgot, The Chamber of Commerce called a Fresno Bee reporter and he went to the demo who in turn took a story from me of the historical site and printed a short story from the information I gave him and printed it in the Fresno bee on Wednesday.

Before hunting the site, I went to the Chamber of Commerce and then the contractor foreman to get permission to search the demo. The Chamber of Commerce was impressed with my interest in the history of the location so they called the reporter without even telling us, You know how Denny is so he ducted behind the shadows of the heavy equipment and left me standing there alone with the reporter as he shows up at night. Anyhow, The reporter was shocked when my detector pulls out an 1880's V-nickel under the cover of darkness...............It was a really nice story too....

See you soon Mark,
Paul (Ca)

Dang Paul, you found all those coins after I hunted it? And now you want to challenge me? Looks like I owe you a lunch lol and maybe you can give me some lessons:please:! You are definitely the guru of metal detecting. I have a win-win situation right this minute anyways....I will be there at 5:00 p.m. on this day Monday, after I run to the store for my wife. Here's the deal, if I find any conductors this evening then you owe me a lunch, but if I don't, my wife is making home made clam chowder for dinner. If you get this message by then, call me and come over for a great dinner bro! We both get something out of this challenge:cheekkiss:!

Hello Mark,

I drove by this morning as they were pouring concrete beside the strip, They tossed fresh dirt/rocks from the poured concrete area on top of the scraped area this morning. You'll see the fresh soil and rocks laying on top, I managed to detect it around 445 pm for a few minutes but gave up because of the new trash on top. Headed to the grocery store and then home from there. Plus, I want you to borrow my SE next time we meet.

It appears they will scrape this stripe futher down before they pour in a new sidewalk, So more goodies may be recovered.

See you soon,
Paul (Ca)

Nothing compared to yours but I'll be hitting the older sites in my area soon, Metal detecting season has arrived :)

Thanks again, Paul
