Have 34 hours on Silver Umax Battery, How long will it last and when do you other Hunters change them out....HH

That sounds like a lot of time! I change batteries, per the manual, when it gets down to two beeps on the battery test ... or if I'm near the end of a hunt, I may continue and let it get down to a single beep.

As soon as it's turned on you draw power from the battery. When it beeps, it drives either the speaker or headphones too.

Don't be a cheapskate, buy a new battery! You are losing depth and don't even know it?

Batteries are pretty much the least of our costs in this hobby. I always figure if battery life is a problem it's a good one because it means you're doing a lot of detecting. I usually change around 2 beeps or when/if the detector gets quirky -- OR -- before beginning a long hunting session if the current battery is a bit long in the tooth. My two bits.
