The X-Terra 70 has some battery restrictions in that certain higher output batteries are (according to the manual) unsuitable. What sort of batteries were you using? Same as usual? I'd try resetting the detector to the Factory Preset by holding down the appropriate buttons when turning it on again. Any more info?

Cheers,

Marco

similar thing happened to me today, when i tried to power on it just made faint popping sounds so turned it off and on a number of times ,then opened it up and checked connections and the battery box everything appeared fine so put back together and turned it off and on a few more times then it came on and appeared to work fine but every now and then it would reset and flash CU but the coil connection seemed fine at the control box. After a hour or so and one location change it seemed to be working fine. Hope this isn't a reoccurring problem, I did have it in my truck for the last few days and i wonder if it is heat related anyway not leaving it in my truck anymore.
I now that i think about it the only similar thing is that we both had problems so sorry for rambling, happy hunting.
