has anyone used the sef. 10x12 d.d. coil:rolleyes:

I had one.......... my take was that it had the same depth as the Eclipse 6x10, only with twice the coverage. The Excellerator 10" round coil gets around 4 more inches and pinpoints better than the SEF. At $124 now at Kellyco, it's a bargain!!!!!

I have used the SEF since it came out and have been very happy with it. I have to disagree with morelic55 on a couple of different levels. The 6X10 is 10' "tall and the SEF is 12" resulting in two more inches of coverage per swing. That translates to 20% more coverage, not twice the coverage. The odd sized loops like the DD and SEF styles can be compared to conical loops for depth by the smaller of the dimensions of the coil. In other words the 6X10 DD would come close to the depth of a 6" conical and the 10X12 should come in slightly better than the stock 950 for depth. The biggest advantage of the DD and SEF loops is in the target separation and ground rejection in very mineralized ground. In neutral to mild mineralized ground, the conical loop will usually have better depth, but not the separation of the DD/SEF loops. I have used the EX 10" DD and EX 10X12 SEF almost exclusively since both were introduced and in my ground, Central IL, both performed about the same, with the edge going to the 10X12 for both a slight depth advantage and slightly better ground rejection. I used these coils on the DFX and V3 and I would expect the performance to be about the same on the MXT as well.

I have had the SEF coil since they first came out....It's a great coil....It constantly finds deeper targets than my 6X10...The 6X10 is a great coil and has it's uses for sure, but it has nowhere the depth the 10X12 has. I have the Super 12 as well...I very seldom use it. I do not have the new 10 inch coil and have heard some great things about it, so it may be my next purchase....The 10X12 SEF is my main coil.....It is the coil that constantly stays on my detector. I will tell you that it is a little heavy, but it's production makes me look over that...Good luck in your decisions.

I've used them on a few MXT's, a couple of M6's and an early Vision/Spectra V3.

The White's 6X10 might make a better "daily use" coil for many, but for me it isn't. I favor a smaller size coil for the trashy sites I hunt and the 5.3 Eclipse coil is my #1 pick. For the nastiest of trash I've had best success with the 5" Excelerator DD coil. For open areas that are lower in trash I will opt for a larger coil. Anything from the 'standard' 950 to the 10" White's D2 or Excelerator 10" to the 10x12 SEF and I have pitted these three DD designs against the 12" concentric.

Where I live and hunt the most, in NW Oregon, I can encounter a lot of mineralized ground, and also some sites that might have deeper targets but also have a fair amount of junk. Of these coils I have made my deepest small artifact/coin size finds with the 12" concentric coil. I also like the pinpointing abilities and, like most concentrics, they have better discriminating characteristics.

Second best depth of detection, on a couple of occasions, came with the 10X12 SEF coil. I like this coil, but for the weight and balance. I've honestly had more consistent good hits on some deeper targets with the 10" DD's than with the 10X12, however, and felt the 10" Excelerator was the best of the three (10" D2, 10" Exc. and 10X12 SEF) because it 'felt' more comfortable and if it lost much against the 10X12, it was very slight and not enough to sacrifice the more comfortable feel. Then, I'm not a youngster anymore, and I'm more critical about overall comfort Vs fatigue when I get out to have fun. :)
