Has anyone used a teknetics Omega 8000? How does it compare to the MXT?

I've got both and have been using the Omega much more often. It's lighter, deeper, has more features, and, I think, IDs better. Having said that, I often go back to the MXT for it's stability and familiarity.

I should add that the MXT is built much better. I've had two problems with the Omega in less than one year, and no problems at all in the four or so that ice had the MXT.

Thanks Kray,

Interesting points kraykepler. For my money, I would consider the comparison made in your second post to be much more important/significant than the first one. JMHO

Hi Kray,

What type of problems did you have with the Omega? Did you have to send it back and if so how was their service?

Thanks,

Bob

The first problem was with ground balancing; some parts ended up being replaced. It wasn't easy getting help from the tech person, either. I sent it in and had to keep calling to see what was going on. The other (current) problem is just that the headphone jack is loose. The rep says that it's an easy fix but that doing it myself would void the warranty. I've been ignoring the problem and will send it in once it gets too cold (if I ever get the RA number).

[size=large]service or lack of it will cost the maker in sales. the only makers i've heard good things about on service was whites and garretts.e]

I have owned 6 MXT's, the last right up until late March. I worked with the MXT Pro prototype a year ago for several weeks and liked it a lot, but like the better-designed finished product better. Adding the Ground Grab feature made a big difference for me. Now, for the Teknetics Omega. We need to keep in mind that the lead engineer behind both of these fine detectors was David Johnson, so I anticipated close performance comparisons.

I had three dealers, who all sell more White's than competitors models, ask me if I had used the Teknetics Omega and what I thought of it. Well, I'd tinkered in a dealer's shop with one but hadn't put one to the test in my regular hunting sites and decided to get one ("Thank You," Dallas Weaver) and have used it a great deal since last March. To answer your simple question of "How does it compare to the MXT?" I will say that they are very close in actual, in-the-field performance.

The basic MXT is still very good, but I do think the MXT Pro upstages it a bit, with the exception of the search coils White's equips their detectors with. I know it might be just me (I doubt it) but most metal detectors are marketed to coin hunters. Most coin hunting, and certainly a lot of relic hunting, takes place in trashier conditions. Therefore, I feel the best coil for 'general use' would be a smaller-size coil. I'd like to see White's bring out a thin-profile coil of about 6"-7" but, until then, the 6

Since nobody out there offers anything to match what the XLT can do, and since all of those I've had through the years have served me so well, I decided to add a final XLT back into my personal arsenal ... to stay. Best darn 'cruising unit' I've ever owned.

If anyone wanted to own two White's models that complimented each other quite well, I think it would be the XLT (or an XL Pro) and an MXT (or an MXP Pro, which I like better). One for 'cruising' and one for 'get serious' types of hunting.

Thanks Monte,

I went ahead and ordered the MXT Pro and the 5.3 Eclipse. I can't wait to get out and start hunting. Again thanks for all the input it really helped me decide.

I think you'll really like the Pro and the 5.3 coil combination.

I love my MXT Pro and thanks to some gentle prodding from Montes posts on the 5.3 I am quickly finding a new favorite coil. I'm sure you will love yours also. Maybe Santa will bring me a copy of Jeff Fosters book now :clapping:

The MXT Pro is one of the better moves I've seen from White's in recent years, and with that 6
