I did it a few times but the depth and coverage was not very good. there is a section in the manual that tells you how to ground balance it on the wet salt sand, if I remember right. It balanced out fine, ran smooth. YOu might want to look on the lost treasure website for the Andy Sabish test, he might explain it there also, he used it at the ocean also.
also in the surf the coil flopped around alot, but they use a bigger screw now to hold it fast.
