Occasionally, the threshold tone fades out and then comes back only when any signal is detected. Also, the tones sound scratchy and dull. This problem seems to come & go, but when it happens its really annoying. any answers out there?

Not sure what would be causing the problem unless it was nulling over iron? You might want to call Minelab and talk to Gus. Their number is: (702) 891-8809 or try emailing him at: gus@minelabusa.com/ Could be something going on in your circuits. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
 
I solved the problem by changing my headphones, and newer had the problem since.
 
& I don't like to stand still so I move on. But you can hunt these areas if you sweep very, very slow. HH, George (MN)
