Yep, and i found i spent more time digging targets and less time trying to figure out whether or not i should dig because of the VID. And after you get used to them you can pretty much no whether or not to dig. I like them better myself. But that said, i do have one with the screen now.
My first detector had an ID screen and I still have it and use it, but my second detector was a Tesoro Vaquero and I do enjoy using it although there is no visual ID.
Even though it is mono tone, with some time you can get some information by the quality of the tone.
I love using mine around old home sites that are iron infested and do not like using the VID detector at these sites.
I have found good targets that I know I passed over with my VID machine because I thought it was trash.
One of these finds was a nice 14 karat gold wedding band found with a Bandido a couple of years ago around a volleyball court.
Nothing wrong with a beep and dig machine and they are fun to use and very capable detectors as far as I am concerned.
Good luck in you decision,
Felix
I tried a Silver uMax once. Nice and light machine. But I found myself thumbing the dist knob up to see where a target discriminated out. This is a simple target id method a lot of hunters use. Why not just use a metered machine if your going to thumb the knob? So I sold the Silver.
I use to use TID all time went back to beep and dig my finds have gone up in the jewelry department, I don't miss TID at all.You learn to listen more whats in ground, and I have also gone to older detectors they work better than newer ones IMHO
Just like to add that the first machine I used for 14 years didn't have a TID meter. I then went to a metered machine and like them. I hunt differently now than I did. I pretty much dig everything except iron. So in these cases a non ID machine would do me fine. But when I have limited time, tired and sore or want to cherry pick - the target ID machines give me that option. You can easily set up a metered machine for "beep dig" hunting. So with a metered machine you can have it both ways. Set your 4000 machine up to just discriminate iron. Turn your tone ID off. Then cover up your display and see how you like it? Maybe you'll leave it covered up?
I bought the DeLeon first and the Cibola after. I found myself using the Cibola most of the time. It is simple to use, less bulky only takes one battery.
I have several of each type and use each. I know the non metered machines well enough that with a bit of thumbing the discrimination knob I can predict the target nearly as well as the meters can and don't feel the lack of a meter is much (if any) handicap at all.

Ok I know you can thumb the know to had a good idea of what it is, but only for every beep above iron right?
Also the 4000 you can't turn off the I'd tones, I would if I could it's either all metal including iron ,and discrim mode with tone ids.
Reality is I need to try one. You guys are dead right if you dig every good repeating signal, that you will find moRe treasure.
It just may be really hard to tell what is a good repeating signal with a single tone machine, can you hear the can slaw? Does it sound bad, mixed with good?
Depending on the size and depth. Aluminum hits a little harder than a coin. But not always. Sometimes it pinpoints a little larger than a coin too. But not always. If I have the time with my TID machines I dig most every beep just above iron. If I'm running out of time or just tired I'll start to discriminate more targets.
I use my Fisher CZ5 in trashy parks with the small 5inch coil to cherry pick deeper hightone targets usually 5 inches or deeper. Most other places I use a Tesoro Vaquero with stock coil. I love the analog CZ5 and the meter is pretty darn accurate on it, but the digital detectors are all over the board and
pretty much useless to me. Beep and digs are the way to fly.........
I use to have several screen detectors and didn't like them so I purchased a silver umax. And didn't look back, remember the best discriminator is your shovel!
