Has anyone ever use a Coiltek 8.5" X 11.5" Platypus on a Sovereign.

The Platypus coil is a great coil to use in the gold fields when hunting in area's with very small nuggets and it might
be all right to use if you are hunting for a small gold chain, it will not give the depth that a 10'' standard coil will ( that
may not find that same small gold chain ). It may be of some use if the area you are hunting in an area that has a
lot of thick brush or is very rocky; as this shape points in between that sort of stuff better than a round coil will but
other than that IMO it would not offer anything you are not getting with a regular coil. HH

XT18000,So the Platypus even though a larger coil than the Joey coil isn't going to perform as well as the standard 10 inch coil but better than a 8 inch coil?I used the Joey coil on my Explorer and didn't like the depth, but was light and pinpointed well that didn't off set the performance difference.I like the 10 inch Slim Line coil on the Sovereign, whch may be a hard coil to beat performance wise. The 240.00 cost of a coil thats a little lighter to me doesn't justify buying this coil. HH Ron

Ron,

On the Explorers I like the Joey coil for some areas that are trashy, but on the Sovereign I didn't like the Joey that much and found that the coils I liked on the Sovereign were the older 8 inch coinsearch coil, the Sun Ray S-8 coils, the stock 10 inch Tornado coils that come on the Elite and GT plus the S-12 Sun Ray. These seem to do the best for me on all the coils I have tried. I never tried any of the bigger coils from Kellyco, but tried the 8 inch concentric coil, but didn't like it after using it 4 or 5 times and sold it. I had field tested some other concentric coil, the 8, 10 and 12 inch and just loved the 8 and the 12 inch coil, but the company decided not to make them at this time.

Rick

I keep going back and fourth about buying one. I have the 10 inch Slimline, 8 inch Coinsearch and S-8. I don't use a meter or Sunray probe so aside from the problems I've heard about the concentric when used with these accessories could you tell me what you didn't like about it as far as depth, tones etc.? Thanks!

Rick, thanks for your reply. My favorite coil is the 10 inch Tornado which at this point I need one so if you have a used one for sale PM me.The hunters who don't like the Platypus have used them on other detectors, gold machines and Explorers, and as we all know the Sovereign works different so the verdict is still out.HH Ron LOL PS Heck if Coiltek will ship me a Platypus for a Sovereign I'll be glad to test it here in our conditions.

To start if off I did a feild test on 3 concentric coils, the 8 inch,10 inch and the 12 inch and loved the 8 and the 12 and felt if they would have ever been made I would have been first in line for one, but this company decided not to make them at this time and may never will as it is not cost effective as not as many Sovereign users to make it pay.
They pinpointed real good and the depth seem to be good and they picked out many good coin targets in well worked area. The 12 even pulled me 10 older wheaties and IH out of a front yard I had hit hard with the Explorer and missed them. The Sovereign with the 12 inch coil just nailed them with good tones and target ID numbers. I was very impressed with it and the 8 inch concentric while the 10 inch seem to false on minerals more while in disc, in all metal it did not even see them.
Now with this and these coils not being made I wanted a 8 inch concentric so I got a 8 inch concentric from a guy that was brand new and never used from out FL company, but it was very unstable falsed a lot with no depth so I felt it was a bad coil and had the guy send it back for a new one and it was better, but still didnt do as good as the DD 8 inch coils so I sold it and if another company makes a concentric coil I sure would try one and hope it would work as good as the ones I feild tested I would be very happy.

Thanks for the info Rick. Maybe there's a reason Minelab never produced their own concentric for the Sovereign. Not sure what type of mineralization you have up there but it sounds like a well designed concentric could work. The original Musky had an optional concentric coil but in my bad ground it was just to unstable. They dropped it as an option on the next release. I'll save the money and maybe add the S-12 instead.
