Has Anyone Ever Lost An Item While Metal Detecting?:detecting:

I was once hunting a park close to downtown Edmonton. At some point, I realized that my prescription glasses were not on my face. I knew I had them when I got to the site, as I can't see/drive very well without them. Funny thing, I back tracked my path and never did find them.

A year later, I lost an electronic pinpointer in the woods. I never found it either. I really hope some new detectorist may have found it and got some good use out of it......over a dog, who may have just buried it.

These days, I tend to do a quick inventory of my digger, Pin Pointer and car keys every 15 minutes or so just in case.

Yep, same here..reading glasses and a screwdriver and a pinpointer so far...so I taped a bungee on my new Pinpointer, always carry a spare screw driver now, as far as reading glasses, well, I buy them in a 4 pack at Sams club, generally have a few in the cab, so no biggie...still, its frustrating like you said, for us to get out looking for drops, and being a dropper ourselves! I try to keep everything simple and light, and also double check keys all the time!

I lost my wedding band and still haven't found it and I've hunted it a bunch since losing it.

I have lost items I found. First, a large cent, then a 14K ring and last a silver dime. I thought I had lost the keys to my Mom's car one time but they were in my chest waders.

Lost a screwdriver which i never did find and dropped my pro-pointer once in the woods found it, wasn't easy but wasn't leaving without it, lol now I have a couple red pieces of electrical tape around the handle to make it easier to spot

Lost my Pro pointer .never did find it... 1903 Barber quarter ..Found, and lost within an hour..

OH YEAH.............

This past week I was in the ocean off of Fort Lauderdale. When I got out of the water I realized that my cellphone, drivers license and a 20 were no longer in
my swimsuit. I had them in a baggie and they floated away!

While in the the water:

I was using a new water pouch, it turned upside down at some point --- lost all the finds --- EXCEPT for the ring that was on a stainless steel carabiner, tethered to my belt.
Mostly trash was in the pouch so I did not retrace the area, I would pick up the targets the next time through the area. I now have a 2 ounce fishing weight in the pouch and it has not been overturned again. I keep my scoop tethered to my belt and my detector strapped to my arm. A rouge wave might overturn the pouch, take a scoop or detector, as it is said --- easy come, easy go and if it is meant to be so be it. Just try to be a good Scout and Be Prepared!

For those who rely on glasses or wear contacts: Keep your old pair in the glove box and take them on vacation when you go. I learned the hard way when I lost one contact lens in the ocean.

Not many of us will admit we have lost something seemingly impossible to lose
1. Left my pin pointer at the last hole I dug. 5 DAYS later I was getting ready to hit it again when I noticed it was missing. Dejected, I drove out to where I thought I had left it. It was there. Whew!
2. The wife bought me a new wedding band. However, it was a wee bit too large. Went detecting on a cold day. Got home put everything away went to wash my hands and the ring was gone. It's still missing.

That's just 2 of the fine jewels that have happened to me in 20+ years of detecting.

This one is embarrassing to tell, but I once lost my AT Pro.
I leaned it against a fence to empty trash from my pouch into a nearby trash can, then went to the truck and stowed my knee pads, pouch, pinpointer, cap and jacket, jumped in the drivers seat and drove home. The next day I drove back to the same park and as I was buckling on my pouch it hit me, NO DETECTOR! I last remembered leaning it against the fence the day before and dashed over there...gone.

There was a happy ending.
A week later I saw an AT Pro listed for sale on Craigslist. I called the number, expressed my interest and arranged to meet. A young man pulled up, produced the detector and I asked if he minded if I removed the coil plug to see the model number. There was my serial number so I showed the young gentleman the police report I had filed with the same serial number. I suggested we call the police to resolve the issue, but he said, "no need, the detector is obviously yours". Honestly, I was taken aback by that. The young man said he gave a friend $100 for it, but knew it was too good to be true.
Do I believe him? I half way do and that's why I gave him a reward for returning it to me

Glad you got your At/Pro back, Forrest. An honest man would have taken it to the police station, but glad you gave him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a reward. He might have been telling the truth and your reward will encourage him to try and find the owner of something in the future. We all win some and lose some.

Been there done that. #$%*!! Makes you mad as all get out. Love that bungee cord idea.

I have also drove off and forgot my detector, went back for it, and it was still there. That time I was more grateful then mad. :detecting:

Lost my Lesche orange handled digger in the woods. Retraced my path several times where I had dragged my spade, found some of the holes that I had dug and covered. You would think that bright orange handle and stainless blade would stand out like a sore thumb. I think a branch or vine caught it and slung it far from my traveled path. I sure miss that baby,it has dug me alot of treasure. I've since tried a couple of after market diggers and they just don't measure up. I will replace it. Anyone try the Evolution model? Whatever I get will have a ring and string attached from here on out.

I was out with a friend metal detecting this swim area and after I had found a few gold pieces and put them in a (safe container water tight for cigarettes) it floated away. I found another piece of Jewelry and found that it was no longer tied around my kneck. So I went over to my friend who I was metal detecting with only to have him hand me back my container which he said found floating in the water.

Lost beach shovel when leaving the source abandoned after wash equipment ... when I returned after three days, she had tired of waiting and had gone with another.
A night on the beach, let the blade next to last hole, when I returned I had gone to need several meters in many ways and I had to go back for more than half an hour ago, until I found ...
I repeatedly assure that cell phone, car key and documentation are in your pocket with closure tightly closed
a greeting

Lost a very nice dry sand scoop, and the builder pasted away so they are no longer manufactured or sold :( I had come off the beach somewhere around 9:45PM and it was dark. I leaned my scoop up against the left side of my truck and dropped my tailgate. Cleaned off my detector and looked thru my finds pouch. Closed the tailgate, walked around my truck and got in. Backed out of the parking space and left. I did not realize it was gone until the next day. Drove back and obviously it was gone. Put an ad on Craigslist with a description and reward, but never did see it again. What I have no clue is 1, how did I walk right past it to get into the truck and not see it...and 2, how did I not see it when I backed out of the parking space???

When I first started detecting, about 2.5 years ago, I left my pinpointer somewhere near a busy trailhead. Naturally, it snowed about 8 inches before I realized that it was missing. About a week later, the snow was melting and I lucked out and found it. Sold the old White's Bullseye on feebay for $65 and bought my first ProPointer.

Last summer, I had an extended senior moment and lost, over the course of a couple of weeks, a stylish, black handled Lesche (the new one is RED) and a Garrett Retriever. Tried to find them several times, but no joy. The area is paved in big iron, which doesn't help. I had backups of both, so no down time, heh. Hopefully, someone found them who needed them.

I lost a good Underarmour beanie hat last year...and yes my head was in it at the time...but I also found a nice underarmour beanie at the boatramp that a duck hunter lost, so I'm even on beanies anyway...and Waterdog, you got a good detecting buddy there I must say!
