Has Anyone Ever Been Assaulted While Metal Detecting? I Was Yesterday Evening:blink:

Although I was fine, the event was nerve wracking. It did end with a sort of an amusing ending. Here is the short version:

I went detecting yesterday to try out a new set of headphones. I went to a nearby school, and was searching a hill, and while squatting to pinpoint a possible coin with my screwdriver, I felt a sudden "pain" in my lower back. I had been punched/kicked in the back for absolutely no provocation or reason. I turned around to see a tall male, 18-20 years old running away. I stood up and went after him for a moment yelling some choice words at him, then stopped , realizing he could easily outrun me. He was also attempting to drop his pants while running! High on meth maybe? I went to a different part of the school yard to continue detecting, when I saw the same gentleman from a distance coming towards me, only with two other buddies. This did not look good at all. I grabbed my Garrett diggerr, pretended it was a cell phone, punched in some numbers then put it up to my ear. When those guys saw that, they figured I called the cops and took off real quick! I had decided at that point that I had had enough excitement, to call it a day and went home. Luckily, no physical harm done.

So, my :garrett: digger may have saved me from a most terrible situation! I think I may now consider seriously getting a cell phone.

I typed up a long report, and dropped off a copy to the school, the day care center and the nearest police station. The police opened up a file for any further issues related to this complaint. Life is so short.......

glad to say never have of course I always have my Glock on my side showing

John,

Glad to hear you are ok. I do not understand why some do what they do. Smart / quick thinking using your Garrett digger to call the police

I was almost assaulted once at my local park. A young kid (Maybe 17-19 years old) was coming quickly to my left and caught him out of the corner of my eye. (I keep my Lesche digger covered with a towel, so it looks just like that is all I am carrying) well when this young punk advanced on me, I snapped my wrist (loosening the towel to where it fell to the ground) and lo and behold that big silver serrated blade of the Lesche appeared! Man that kid did a double take lol and quickly move away from me in a jiffy. Can't understand for the life of me why he B-lined it out of there.

We have to remember to be vigilant and keep one eye on our surroundings at all times.

Glad you are ok. I hope it doesn't come to me having to carry concealed or open carry. My G17 is a little large.

Glad to hear your ok and looking at getting a cell phone.
I was at a local park and was Assaulted myself by some local gang teenagers. When I went to the local police and filled out a report they told me that there was Nothing I could do as they was all minors. As I left the police station three cops in plain clothes came up to me and told me that if I was attacked by Anyone in the park I had the wright to detain them until the cops got there.
Now when I got to any park or out metal detecting I have a buddy thing. I always go out with a friend. A couple of my friends carry so all I have to do is enjoy myself.
I have also hear of one guy that got assaulted by three men that took his metal detector. Some phones have Great cameras on them now.

I've been attacked two separate incidents by dogs - two dogs the first time and three dogs the second. I fended them off with my AT-Pro in my left hand and a Lesche digger in my right, Both times it happened in a public park. Fortunately, I was not hurt nor did I have to hurt the dogs. In both instances the dogs' owners were in the park and couldn't have cared less that their dogs were attacking me. If it ever happens again I will call the police. John, I'm glad you were not harmed, although it had to have been unsettling. I highly recommend getting a cell phone and carrying it while metal detecting. Safe hunting, all.

This is why, so far, I don't use headphones. I think it would be real easy for someone to sneak up on you if you have headphones on. When I'm at a public park I always have my eyes peeled. I don't have my concealed to carry yet, but would probably carry if I did. I don't use a shovel, I use a knife. It in itself looks intimidating. Sad to think we have to worry about these things when we are out just minding our own business doing our hobby.
Glad you are alright.
Mike

I often carry a hunting knife, but not when hunting school yards. I'd be afraid of getting arrested.

It's a dangerous world we live in and thank God you are safe and suffered no permanent damage. One reason I use a sling when I metal detect, in case someone try's to run off with my metal detector. They might knock me out or stun me, but dragging a 270 lb man around the park would be difficult.
Sad thing is people like this full of anger and hate for no good reason, often blame the victims for their behavior. Everybody stay safe and keep your eyes open out there.

Wow....John....im really glad u are ok....too.... Ive never had any problems but man...i know i keep my eyes open a little more these days..you just never know..
About ppl these days.....
My town has some pretty rough areas too
Take care, my friend.
HaloEffect426..........

Glad to hear you're ok John

Close call !

A few years back I was hunting a large school playground and had parked my car in a parking lot some distance from the area I was hunting. I happen to look back toward my car and saw three young men looking in the windows and trying to open the doors. They saw me out in the field and started walking toward me. The first thing I thought of was to call 911 on my cell phone, which I did. I knew that the police station was close by and by the time the boys were almost to me a patrol car pulled into the field and drove out to where they were. The officer told me that I was lucky because these boys were trouble and that he was in the area to receive my call. If you think you see trouble heading your way, don't hesitate to call for help, if you can.

I ALSO KEEP A GUN WITH ME AT ALL TIMES ON MY SIDE WHERE IT CAN BE SEEN WHEN I HUNT IN THE WOODS. YES I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED. I NOW DO 95% BEACH HUTING. THE SHARKS STAY IN THE WATER
