has anybody used the silver umax on the beach ,any info appreciated:detecting:

I've got the silver and have found a lot of stuff on the beach, mostly coins. You didn't say if you were talking about salt or fresh water beaches. No problems with fresh water, even going in around ankle deep where the young mom's lose rings.

Salt water beach is another story. You won't have any problems on the dry sand, but once you get near the wet sand and salt water you will have a problem. The silver wasn't made to detect in a mineralized area. Going to wet sand and salt will cause problems as the detector will start to chirp a lot and you'll have to turn down the Sensitivity. You may have to turn it down to the point where you'll go over something and not be able to detect it.

My advice is to work the fresh water beaches both dry and wet. The salt water beaches in the dry sand only. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Happy Hunteing!!!

Hi, What do you mean by a fresh water beach? I know all the oceans have salt in them. Our you referring to waters that go into the ocean? Or lake beaches?
I have the super umax. I understand what your saying about salt and wet sand being difficult for the umax. I'm still waiting for my first detector to arrive.
Also when people in general mention high mineralized ground. What does that mean? Thanks......

I think they are actually refering to Black sand at the ocean beaches when they say mineralized ground. Actually mineralized ground is more what you would find in Australia or out west in Arizona where there is alot of iron in the rocks. We are talking about hematite and magnatite which eventually becomes black sand. Where you find black sand you also find gold if its a gold region. The salt water causes problems for some detectors not made for salt water beaches. You will probably keep to dry sand anyway unless you have a water proof detector. Fresh water beaches are those that you find at lakes and rivers. Hope that helps you.

Hi Bluesky,

I'm talking about your local fresh water ponds and lakes where people go for picnics, games and swimming, not oceans.

Black sand and salt water beach sand. Some of these areas you need a PI detector.
