Has anybody used the 5"excelerator coil on the 2500?

Just wondering if any of you could give me some info on the 5" excelerator coil for the 2500. I have read about them, but haven't read too much about anyone using them. Don't think they've been out long, so I just wanted some input before I bought one.

I got one about 2 yrs. ago, used it once and that was it. I didn't notice it was a DD in the ad and man, does it love bottlecaps, notches in as quarters. Not really any better depth than the Garrett 4 1/2" coil. Maybe it's just me, but not a favorite coil of mine. If you are in some heavy mineralized stuff or wet salt sand, it may be just the ticket for you as that's what the DDs are good in. Oh, and no imaging either.

I have the 5" Garrett Stinger coil and have never used it. I also have an ACE 250 that I rig with the stinger and take it along with me. That way I don't have to change coils. Works quite well on the 250 in trashy areas and around sidewalks and metal fences and I don't notice much loss in depth. Jim

Can't say much regarding the 5" coil, but have a way of approximating the performance of a smaller coil. There's a website, "Wayne's this & that" I believe, where the transmitted field of the GTI (stock) coil & the 12.5" one were mapped out. Interesting thing is, looking at the field near the coil, it really bulged out. Now, this suggests that if you were to raise the coil by 3-4", you'd be getting approximately the same ground coverage & depth as that of a small coil. I used to do the same thing with my GTI 1500 when hunting campsites that were loaded with trash. Works like a charm, but is rather hard for a confirmed ground scrubber like me. Another benefit of doing this is that the ground signal is also much reduced.

...Try the 5x10 elliptical "scorcher" coil from Garrett. I probably use it more than the imaging coils on my 2500. Covers a lot of ground, super easy to pinpoint and handles ground mineralization very well! Absolutely the coil to make the GTIs capable competition machines. I love it! Now if I could just get the good folks at Garrett to make one for the Ace 250, I'd be positively beside myself!

I'd tend to favour the 5x10" 'cause it's (probably) cheaper, seperates extremely well in trash, probably goes deeper, and gives way better ground coverage. Another thing I'll mention is that Garrett has an excellent service department. ..Willy.
