Has anybody owned an X-Terra 70, MXT? How do they compare with a F-70?

I know there are a lot of variables. I was told to buy a MXT or a X-Terra 70 for my type of hunting two years ago. I do a mixed type of MD'ing. I got lied off from my job and it was almost two years till I had steady full time work. That gave me a long time to check out both detectors.

In my opinion the MXT was too heavy and had no depth. I didn't like the battery set up. A buddy of mine in Fl. had a MXT and I actually got a hit on a cent that he couldn't pick up on with my Ace 250. I moved to WV. and many people told me MXT's doesn't work well here. I found that hard to believe, since they work well in the gold fields. I didn't have the money to chance buying one and not have it work for me. They seem to be built well.

People always talk this is better or that one is better, even if it is a dog. I heard the X-Terra 70 wasn't built that well and again didn't have the depth I wanted. I don't like swinging slow. I didn't like them not having a small coil. It was more expensive and I was worried about the customer service.

Among the crowds I heard Fisher was a good detector. There seemed to be something missing with Fisher. User friendly, up to date or having a detector for my needs. I didn't know what it was. I was also worried when they got bought out that the quality would still be there.

I am glad that I waited two years. When Fisher came out with the F-70 I had found my detector. Fact: It is less costly than the others, lighter, inexpensive to operate.
It has the depth I needed to relic hunt. It separates well in trashy areas. It does work well in WV's soil. I do a little prospecting when I visit my sister in NC. I haven't use it for that, but it will happen. I have been prospecting for 20 years and I know the area better than many locals.

I'm a little tight with my money and do a lot of shopping around. I feel I have done well by choosing the F-70. I have respect for the other detectors and know the operater is an important component. They seem to be in the same class of detectors. How do you think the others compare? Have you used them? Anything I said seemed not true?

I've owned them all. And we are talking about a lot of variables. Not just in the type of hunting you do. But in the inherit functionality of the detectors you mentioned. Variable discrimination vs Notches, relic mode vs programmable notch settings, vast differences in audio tone capabilities, Prospecting modes vs settings. Knobs vs pads. Pads vs triggers. There are, indeed, a lot of variables. But if you've found the F-70 to be "your detector", congratulations. Some guys spend years and years trying to find one that does everything they want it to do. Sounds like you did your homework and you are happy with your decision. And at the end of the day, that is all that really matters.

As to any of your statements being untrue.......1. I would point out that the X-70 has two small coils. The 6-inch DD at 18.75 kHz and the 6-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz. For the record, the X-70 has eight coil options. 2. The sweep speed of the X-70 is one of the most "forgiving" that I've ever used. You can "work" it as slowly, or as quickly, as just about any other detector available. 3. Whoever said the depth of the X-70 was poor, was apparently unfamiliar with that detector and coil options. 4. And as far as having concerns for Minelab Customer Service, it hasn't come up for me often. But when I've had to send anything back to them, they get it repaired and returned very quickly. 5. And in closing, I've never found a coin with my Ace 250 that I couldn't have found with the MXT, F-70 or X-70. JMHO

Now, go enjoy your F-70. HH Randy

It is good to hear from someone who owns them all. Unless you own them all it is really hard to know the truth about the different detectors. I know two men that claimed to use their Ace 250 more than their X-70.

The F-70 will be my detector for a long while. I make the most with what I have. You should see how many mile I put on a car before it dies and I get rid of it.

My research is a little old. I remembered when all the X-Terra guys was crying about not having a small coil.

Randy pretty much said it all and I currently have all three of the machines being talked about. I just want to add one thing, in my opinion, the build quality of the X-terra 70 is actually better than the current crop of fishers. My wife is using my F-70 more than I am and she did spank me with that machine recently while we were hunting an elementary school playground. But, I'm finding that of the three machines I like my XT-70 better. I've been trying ways to get the most depth out of my MXT, but everything makes it so heavy that it bothers my right shoulder, even swinging left-handed. With mid-sized and smaller coils the XT-70 is every bit the equal of my MXT and actually has a few features I wish my other machines had (like different tones, even in all metal). But, going back to what Randy said, its hard to compare these three because of how different they are feature wise. Guess its a lot like buying a pair of shoes, we all need to cover our feet, but the similiarity ends there and what works for me just might not work for you.

xt 70,more coils, less eratic noises, slow or fast sweep speed, never needed upgrades, and very deep if you know how to set up your detector.

I'm also interested as I had the F75 and was the most terrible experience I've had.. I want to know is the F70 vdi stable or does it jump around like the F75? I have a M6 which is solid locks on the vdi and I also been learning the XT70.. Still curious about the F70... Wish I could try one out so I don't end up with the same problems as I did with the F75..
Thanks,
Ray

To make a long story short, buy a new cz,you will not be sorry.from the ones i have seen all the new fishers tid jump around and around.

I am still learning the F-70, but you can adjust it to be more stable. So the #'s can be jumpy. Kind of like a race horse, a little jumpy, but it preforms if you know how to control it. It is a sensitive detector and picks up on everything. Even cow urine. Tune it down and it is still deep. I'm a crazy sort of guy and I want to hear it all. I want to get all the depth I can. No one can argue that it isn't fast and separates well. It is also light. What more could you ask for?

Stability and accuracy.. Don't want another detector like the 75 that has to be tuned down so far to even work to get just average depth and still no stability..

Ray, I still have my F70 and its definitely a better machine than the F75 was. However, I wouldn't waste your money. IMHO, the XT-70 is a better all round machine.

I have had them all and I have a F75 and my friend has the f70. Chatter is no big deal nubers that don't lock in don't matter I wonder why some of the top relic machines don't have meters. It is a combo of sound and numbers. It is a great machine if not one of the best for unmasking targets if you know how to use it. For you it is what feels right for you and how you apply what the machine is telling you and how well you understand it. Mono tone-four tones 0 disc-6 disc. The F70 has a way about it that you have to feel comfortable with. For my money the F70-F75 are the best machines I have used in the past 12 years.

With the F70 all you really need is the DD it is so fast why carry a lot of different coils when one works for almost every need. The MXT has no depth in Calif is not as fast and does not unmask like the Fisher. And on the fisher if needed you can have the small coil for tight places.

read this and learn why your getting EMI http://www.findmall.com/read.php?37,822992,822992#msg-822992

Huh??? I read the article and it had nothing to do with EMI. If you're insinuating that I don't know how to read a manual or adjust a machine, send me a PM and we'll discuss it offline. I'm sick and tired of you guys pushing these machines and trying to convince everybody that some how its their fault it doesn't work right.

I had a Minelab Sov XS2A Years ago that went balistic if I went near Pylons or another XS2 user............Still a great detector

9 times out of 10 If the numbers are jumping all over the place your Sensitivity is too high or you are over loads of ferrous. If it is EMI and it causes you grief then yip use another detector but its unfair to say a detector is useless when most are happy with it. On most TID detectors I don't even use the meter I go with the Tones.

I have had faulty detectors in the past, man when the Explorers came out they cracked all over the place. The SE's where getting split screens. I have no axe to grind with anyone so don't take it personal. I read most posts since the 70 came out but only see the ODD one where peeps have a problem

90% of all complaints about electrical interference is really caused from user set up.

It should have been quite easy to figure that out. Did you return the detector to the factory ? Did you check it out with another detector that was the same type ?

A serious amount of people are using that model without any problems. Some figured it out.

Ok, jump all over me why doncha? I had a bad unit for the first one, returned it and got a second unit that turned out to be bad. I wasted all summer figuring this out and decided my time was worth more than fooling around with sending machines back and then having a new machine and doing the quality control thing on that one as well. If you have a good machine enjoy it. I've got better things to do than test out machines until I get a good one. For the record, I still have an F70. That machine is definitely more stable and better built than the F75. And, its the only reason I still visit this forum.
