Harnesses are they a Help or Hinder ?

I was looking into getting my Wife one because she is thinking she would like to give Metal Detecting a try But she has wreak wrist and I thought it might help.Just wondering if anyone used them or have heard about them. I found one at Kellyco and am thinking about ordering one for Her, But did not want to wast money if they do not work. Thanks All

This is one of those Ford vs. Chevy questions.

Personally, I reckon them a hindrance. I'm a digger - I only use a detector to tell me where to dig. Since I dig just about everything, I'm up and down and up and down and up and down and.... well, you get the idea. The last thing I want is to contend with some strappy, hangy, confining harness shifting around. It's hard enough to keep my pants from sagging too much.

May I recommend she simply go detecting and so build up the needed muscles that way. It's like my old guitar teacher used to say, "The best way to build up the muscles for playing, is to play."
Maybe a few wrist rolls and other exercises with light weight would help, too, if needed.

I've tried one. For me, it got in the way and added one more thing to strap on, get caught up in and get frustrated with.

In the Garrett world, I don't think you can go wrong with one of the Ace detectors as a good, lightweight introductory machine. As Dahut says, her muscles will build up, and it actually happens pretty quickly. She may be switching the detector from one hand to the other at the beginning, and with less frequency as she becomes adjusted to the weight over the course of even just a few hunts. It's not a race, and she can go at her speed as she feels comfortable. My wife is very small too, and if I can ever get her to go out, I'm sure she'll have an adjustment period too at the beginning. I'll just have to "seed" the hunting place with some goodies before we go out there to keep her interested, and hope no one comes along before us. :)

Because metal detecting is an unnatural thing for your arm, body and back anyway, she will have to adjust with whatever kind of setup she chooses, from the start. This is where local dealers can be a big help and might let her try a harness to see if she likes it and allow her to return it if not.

Good luck! Of course you realize, she'll find something amazing right off the bat that you've never found before. That's always the way it works!

I Have an Ace 350 That i recently purchased before buying the New 1500 SO She will be using it I know it light weight But I just thinking ahead I seen one at Kellyco and thought I would ask about them If they worked then I thought she would hunt a little longer with out getting So worn out. But if she does I well make sure she brings her book along LOL

[size=large]the digging will have to considered also. as stated she can swing and switch but she has to know about how hard some digging is. also stated is she just needs to do it and decide if she ;s willing to persue it. it may help to inform her she's not getting any of your gold ring finds. she'll have to find her own.:starwars:

I know what you mean about getting older. I use one of Doc's Swingy Thingy's it sure helps. Digging a hole is now an event. I just slow down & on hook it, then lay my detector down. I some times use golf ball tee's to mark some of my pinpoints & when I get a few ahead I shut off my detector & set down take my Garrett pin pointer & make the down time worth while lol.

I thought about doing that with the golf tees LOL I am glad you said that I don't feel so bad now!! I am able to dig But the getting up and down takes a lot out of me. I take plenty of breaks But I love the time I am out Detecting

Glad if it works for you. I went cat fishing the other night & had to crawl on my knees back to my seat in the boat. My daughter ask me how I get up when metal detecting, I told her I crawl to the nearest swing set & pull myself up. Old age ain't for sissy's. One of the reason's I got a new AT Pro is so I can use my long handle scoop & don;t have to get up & down.My old friend Mel Fisher would have a good laugh if he could see me in action now. His old saying "Today's the day" still keeps me going.

"Old Age Aint For Sissy's"... I like that. It takes lifetime of pain to deal with being old.

I wouldn't mind having a harness when I take my 2500 out in the water at the lake. Anything to keep me from dropping it in the water and frying the electronics. It's alligator breeding season right now and they were warning people on one river to be careful and not go tubing. I guess this applies to wading out in the river where the lake is too. The only thing worse than dropping my detector in the water would be using it to repel a hormone crazed male alligator. lol

I have found a lightweight, chest type harness by Lejermon, Inc. to be useful and fairly unobtrusive. Due to age and a painful back problem, I decided to distribute the load from my right arm. My AT Pro now hangs from an adjustable bungee cord attached to the harness, and swings easily and almost weightlessly. It is convenient to be able to just drop the ATP when I need that hand free and know the detector will not fall to the ground. If you use it in the water, you can let it go and it's still tethered to you. I still might prefer the complete freedom of no harness, but it has these "trade offs", and helps avoid lower back pain.

Yeah, that's what KellyCo sells. I've got a couple of 'em. It's nice to have sometimes, as you mention, especially while water hunting. Either way, land or sea, it's nice to be able to let go of the detector and let it just float there.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Sure they work as they move the weight to the large back muscles from the smaller arm muscles..But a word of caution if you have a bad back or perhaps feel you may injure your back stay away. Do they add straps to get in the way restrict your movements to a degree of course as always plus and minus in all aspects of life.Good thread and personally a little on the job training
swinging or some pertinent exercises is in order or even a lighter unit comes to mind..but again whatever works...
