Hard to switch back and forth between ...

discrimination and Pin-point. Old problem, anything new? I recently returned to the Sovereign/BBS fold, because I love the machine, that's why! I have mounted my box/coil on a new Plugger 2 piece pole, and added the extension to the tail end. It moves the weight further back, and therefore feels lighter in balance. BUT, in moving the box further back, I lose access to the flip switch that moves me from discrimination to pinpoint and back. In fact, it gets lost just plain lost in my arm pit. How can I make that switch MUCH more easily accessible for easy back and forth between discriminate and pinpoint? I know that some have managed to add a switch to the pole/handle, but I think that's way beyond my skills, talents, and abilities, not to mention my super powers. Talk to me, someone from out beyond the stars...

On the older Sovereigns with the V clip I would mount the clip backward so the control would be pointing towards the coil, this way I could reach with my other hand to flip the toggle switch as it was right under my elbow. Now on the Elite and the GT I would do the same thing, but here I had to grind off the stop on the bracket and round it to be able to slide it on the arm cuff bracket.

I did the remote pin point / discriminate switch mod with my Excalibur II. It is really pretty easy to do and very simple. I would recommend doing it. One of the best mods you can do next to a straight shaft. I am sure you can do it yourself as it was so easy to do for me. If it was easy for me, then it must be able to be done by just about anyone. In fact, the Sovereign would be easier to do than the Excalibur as it is not waterproof and so it does not require you to address the waterproof nature with epoxy or sealants.

I have the control box fixed under the stem, and use a bungee harness to take the weight. I put a large freezer bag over the whole control box to protect it from dust /rain, you can easily flick the switch from all metal to discrim, it has worked well for me for the last 8 years!

Which sovereign do you have..I have pic's of the XS2 I did..very easy...the others I have the info..little harder.............

That is why I hipmount the control unit in my "hip pouch" I just couldn't get use to the control box being mounted on the shaft. Still can't and probably never will lol. The pouch is belt-mounted on my right. I mainly swing the detector with my dominant left and have the controls right near my right hand for an instant flick of the switch. - Jim

I also hip mount my gt. I've tried shaft mounting it (after starting out hip mounting) and really hated it. I tried the pinpoint mode at first, but now pinpoint in disc all of the time. Sandy fingers and toggle switches well.... Perhaps if you can be happy pinpointing in disc you won't have to to the modification ( I would never try it either). I want a plugger shaft too
Cheers,
Jim

This is critterhunters setup...at a glance looks tuff but once you get into it easy...

I very seldom touch the switch. Discrimination mode is deeper. So I never use all metal to hunt. And with patience and practice I learned to do a decent job of pinpointing in discrimination mode. Every once in a while I have that problem target where I do use it, but not very often. But a trigger switch done correctly is a very nice feature. Maybe over the winter you could find someone on the forum to do the mod for you. Just a thought.

I use a chest mounted camera case ,the GT control box fits perfect, very comfortable and easy for me to get at controls.

Chest mounting is the way to go. Use the black Minelab bag or something similar then get an extra "compression" strap from the camping supply section at walmart. Put the bags' strap around your neck and run the other strap through the belt loop on the bag and then around your waist. It will keep the detector from swinging away from you while digging.

For you guys with the black hip mount bag, I would like to ask a question. Why did the company make the back of the bag, (the portion where the belt goes through), attach with only velcro? The first (and only time) I used the bag I didn't look at the bag before puting it on my hip, and about fifteen minutes into detecting the bag plops off on the ground against the rock of a jetty I was detecting by. Thats when I noticed the belt attaching portion was held on by velcro. The detector still worked, so I carefully rubbed the back of the bag all over to make sure it was sticking as much as possible to the other piece, put it back on my belt, pressed some more on the case to make sure it was as secure as could be, and went back to detecting. Another fifteen (more or less), minutes later plop, the bag falls off again, this time just as the water was going out and my control unit lands in about 1/4 inch of water and the signal starts jumping all over the place. The next day I let it sit in the sun and by that evening it was working ok again, but the battery door is harder to open now. I'm 69 years old and do eat a few to many donuts, but I'm far from being obese. (I'm 6'2" 191 pounds), so why would the bag come off like that. Has anyone else had that problem? Does anyone see any problem with my taking the case to a seat cover shop and having them stich the velcro area so it won't come off anymore? At my age it's a lot easier to swing hip mounted.

Here is the bag I chest mount with. The front pocket holds a spare battery. All you need to do is cut a hole in the bottom for the cable. The GT fits very secure inside. The pouch is just big enough. You can also belt mount if you like.

It is called The Advanced Tactical Dump Pouch Probably around 20.00 w/ shipping. PM for a link.

Thanks Goodmore for the GT hip-mount bag idea! That baby will work really well for me.

It's been awhile since I had my Sov. gt but I seem to remember the bag as having a regular belt loop too? The velcroed piece is removable so that you can cover the control box while it is mounted on the shaft. If you do not plan on using the bag in such a way, I see no problem with sewing the piece onto the bag. Have them put a belt loop on it too.HH-CC.

Goodmore, thank you very much for the information on The Advanced Tactical Dump Bag. I looked on line and it is something I will be getting soon.

Crispy Critter, you are absolulely right. I was too stupid to look on the opposite side of the bag because the velcro side of the bag stood out so much that I didn't look anywhere else. Sorry but it's not easy to see when I'm standing around with my head in my butt, because its dark in there (and my head being where it was explains why my breath smells the way it does).

Not a problem OL.....lol! I'm glad that I was able to help. HH-CC
