Hard of hearing problem

Hello fellow detectorist, i want to buy a Tesoro metal detector, but i'm hard of hearing, i have hearing problems at 62 years old... Do you think i'll have problem detecting with a Tesoro (Compadre, or Silver Umax, or DeLion).
Also, is it necessary to do a air test with a brand new detector ? If yes, why ? Doing a air test, is it like programing the detector ?
I'm a noobie...so i have a lots a ?????
Thanx to all in advance for your precious help !!!

If you use a good set of headphones with volume control you should not have a problem. There is a lite you can plug into the headphone jack if you are totally def.
Air test are only good to see if your detector is working and to hear the different tones or VID numbers but they may read different in the ground.

I also have poor hearing , but try a quality pair of headphones like the " Black Widow " headphones as they really make the difference in hearing those faint sounds stand out ! Best of Luck .

The Black Widow headphones are designed for people with hearing problems. They are advertised for this purpose.

Tesoro's are knowing for a LOT of volume!

Air test in your case would be for just getting use to the controls,
The different sounds of different objects,
Some idea of depth,
Getting the feel for sweep speed, (Getting To Know Your Detector)

So, in a way it is about programing, buts its not programing the detector, its programing the operator!

As everyone is telling you that you need a good set of Headphones. I am total deaf in some sounds and a good 80% deaf in the other sounds and have the most power full aids hanging in back of my ears as they don't make them more powerful I am told and I just find headphones that are the loudest for the detector I used, so I have several different sets for different detectors. I found the Black widows some are telling you about were not loud enough for me, but got a set of Bushmasters made by the same people that makes the Black Widows that have enough volume for me and those that hunt with will tell you can can hear my targets 15 feet away from me, so they are loud. On my Minelab Sovereign the Timberwolfs work the best for me, but when I had my Explorer these were not loud for me and that when I got the Bushmasters. Now on air test, this is used to see how different target sound as some will tell you, also to see where the disc is set for different object you want to reject. Another thing I like to do with any new detector I try out is buy putting trash items next to a good target to see how it will sound and how close I can move the targets close together before they blend into one target. I do not use it to see the depth it will get as it is different in the ground than the air test.

Just get a good set of headphones that will fit good and block out most background noise and you will be fine.

I am 75 and have severe hearing loss. I use good quality headphones with volume turned up to where I am comfortable. During the winter I wear my hearing aids but in the summer when I sweating profusely I leave them in the car as the moisture can damage them. I don't feel that I miss an undue number of targets due to my Lousy Hearing.

Thank you everybody for your replies, really appreciated !!! Now i will buy a metal detector & Black Widow headphones & wait for the spring........ As i live in Montreal.....lol
Happy hunting....

I went with a Tejon several years ago because of the adjustable output tone. I can set the machine to the tone I hear the best.
