Hard Case for my XT 70

New member
I went to Dicks Sporting Goods Saturday and got a Plano double rifle hard plastic case. From what I've heard on some detectors, the controll box cant be removed, but since the XT 70s can,I take it off and unscrew the coil, take the upper tube off (its too long if you dont) and loosen the the middle one with the S curve so I can twist it flat, also have to take the forearm rest off.It all goes in there,9'' & 6'' coils lay the controll box flat, extra batteries,V4 pointer (that aint much good, thats another question) and flash light.

The soft case is good enough I guess, but with it in the gun case I dont have to worry about bending or breaking something as much when we go out of town, with luggage piled up in the trunk, and it does'nt take up as much room.

Now for the pointer question,it only detects about a 1'' away for a coin,2'' on bigger stuff.
What good will that do?
I can put a quarter in my fist and it wont pick it up most times.Oh well,it was one of those freebies.
Is there a good pointer that works good?

I'm not a fan of the V4 or V2 but I know it works.(how long is the question) That's about the right depth on a pinpointer. Much further and it would be hard to locate your target. On the other end of the scale if it could detect 5 inches. You could never pinpoint a target. I use my pinpointer in a stabbing motion and do good. Once I get a hit I leave the pinponter still and dig down to the end of it.

They are very well built and durable. They come with a holster that attaches to your belt. The best feature of the VibraProbe is that it turns itself on when tipped upside down. And shuts itself off (after 30 seconds) when you put it back in the holster. The only "problem" I had was that it got dumped out of the holster on a couple of occassions (when I was wallowing around on the ground) and I lost it. You can only imagine how long it takes to find one of those buggers out in a picked corn field. Anyway, I solved that problem by attaching a retractable key cord to it. I made that post several months ago. But here is a link to the post and the pic, if you are interested. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,613779,613794#msg-613794

Digger, the one got was the freebie from Kellyco.I've never used before so when I had to get within 1-1/2'' for it to go off,I thought there might be something wrong with it.I'll see how it handles later,It's 29 degrees now outside and it feels cold when your used to 50 dregree weather, but I'll try to go out this afternoon in the yard to see how they both do.

Actually, the VibraProbe's I've had don't go any deeper than that. In fact, I prefer that they don't. For me, the purpose of a pinpointer is to find a target spot on. If the Pinpointer goes 2 or 3 or even four inches deep, what is the point! You detector coil gets it that close, or closer. I want mine to find a coin in the pile of dirt I have removed. Or on the edge of the hole. But different folks have different opinions as to what works for them. HH Randy

Digger. I was sold on getting a vibra-probe Untill I read your post. When im out detecting my coil usually gets me right to the target, or pretty darn close to it Then I usually wave hands-full of dirt under the coil. If the probe is only giving about an inch whats the point in spending the money if the system is working and im consistantly finding my target. I thought they would go like 3- 4 inch deep or something crazy like that. Thanks for saving me some moolah man.

For the first 30 years or so, I felt pretty much like you do. But age has a way of changing our habits! I'm still pretty decent at pinpointing with the coil. And it isn't a big deal to wave handfuls of dirt under the coil. Why would I need an electronic probe if it only goes an inch or two deep? Actually that is exactly the reason I like the VibraProbe. As someone who hunts out in corn fields and bean fields, I can't tell you how much time the VibraProbe has saved me. Especially when I dig a hole and the darn coin has either landed on it's edge in the stubble, or down in a crack in the dirt. An electronic probe makes recovering the coin a lot easier and quicker than sorting through all that dirt again and again. And many (most) of the time, I don't even have to get down on the ground to recover the coin. The handle of the VibraProbe is long enough that I can do my "electronic sorting" from my feet. Just bend over, dig, pinpoint, fill the hole and go on the the next one. And by not wallowing around in the dirt all day, I don't get my truck near as dirty (on the trip home) as I use to. JMHO HH Randy

I have the Vibraprobe 560, I use and like it. It has saved me a couple of times. Has it sped up my digging? Yes to be blunt it has, Beale.
