Happy with the MX5?

I was watching a few of the MX5 videos on you tube and it seems like the
numbers really bounce all around with that detector?

I know that happens but it seems more so than than I may want to deal with?

If you have one - share your thoughts!

I guess I did not notice the numbers jumping around on the video's I watched, but very interested in the MX5

I don't really see that much jumping around except with zincs - those can be anywhere between the upper 50's to the mid 70's.

I am very pleased with mine. Great depth! I am having a great time using the two tone option. This may be my primary way of using it everywhere - parks, yards, schools and ghost towns!

Maybe you can help me out. I see that I your signature you own a m6, mx5 and etrack. I also have the m6, the mx5 and am considering a minelab. Question is, everyone talks marvels on the etrack and I am quite sure it has to be a great detector, but you are the perfect individual to answer my question. Is there a BIG difference in performance between the etrack and the two whites, if there is what is the sense in having anything more than the etrack... I am just asking because I just can't understand why, if minelab is so great, people still buy other brands. I have never owned a minelab and as for now I have had almost every mayor brand out there but minelab.

The etrac is a coin magnet. Loves silver and is one of the deepest detectors on the market. The whites is better on small gold. If gold isnt a big deal for you then yes an etrac would be fine for an only detector ... Some people just like having options. And having a few diff detectors isnt so bad :)

Been detecting 38 years. Owned about most all detectors at one time or another. I owned an Etrac. Very good detector. Depending on where you hunt and what for. If hunting where deep silver is known to be or the like. The Etrack is the detector to have. But if you are a park or schoolyard, tot lots hunter the targets usually are not that deep. A much less expensive detector will do the job. I found where I hunt I felt like I was rabbit hunting with an elephant gun.Sort of like deer hunting with a cannon....Just my 2 cents....Jack

There is a lot to be considered here. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to fairly name any one of these as first in terms of performance. Like Jack, I would choose the Etrac if going for deep silver (especially in heavily detected places). I would also pick it for iron-infested areas as the TTF program has proven itself to me on multiple occasions.

If I were going to a modern park or school with normal hunting pressure, I would grab the MX5. It's way lighter than the Etrac and I feel it would be every bit as effective as the Etrac on shallow (6" or less) silver and very possibly MORE effective for gold.

PLUS, there is something to be said for weight and speed! As much as I have enjoyed making some great finds with the Etrac, it is HEAVY and to use it effectively, you have to go pretty SLOW. Back before I got the Etrac, I consistently found more than the guy using his Etrac or SE simply because I was covering SO MUCH MORE GROUND!

Just my two cents.

Well first let me thank you for the information... I ended up trading my mx5 for an mxt pro, might be almost the same but the mxt cand do a bit more... As far as the etrac well it HAS to be a great detector since I haven't read one bad review on its performance, just that it is slow and heavy...

What did you not like about the MX5? Trying to read up on everything MX5 related. Thanks

Nothing really.... It's a fine detector, just isn't a whites as I am used to.... The detector feels cheep compared to the mxt or m6....also I feel that the mxt is more of an all arround detector, while the mx5 I feel its good for coin and jewelry, and relics at most, prospecting is a bit out of the question, and since I sold my lobo st, I wanted a detector capable of eventually prospecting.
Also I personally don't believe they put an mxt in a smaller package, they might have made a similar detector to the mxt but I don't believe that there is an mxt brain in the mx5...
Last thing, I loved my mxt so much I just wanted another one...

I bought an MX5 on the spur of the moment. Very good detector. But I sold it. I had 14 detectors. Several so called high end. The MX5 has very good see through in iron. I took 2 16 penny nails. Placed them about 3 inches apart. With no coin in between, no sound. I placed a quarter directly between them and pick up the quarter loud and strong. Try that with most other detectors.I sold the MX5 simply because I had so many other detectors. I sold eight detectors at once to try and thin the herd. I am 81 years old and don't need that many detectors......Jack....
